I just had the buggiest session of everquest yet. But before that...

Speckles made a character on Oasis, purportedly to play with me... on the other continent, so we can't play together. Sigh.

I found Fallen gate, but couldn't get in. Apparently, there's a quest to let you get in. According to the new EQ2 map patch I installed, it's 'Zargonn's Legacy', which is marked as an Access Quest so okay. I didn't get far on the quest, though, since step 2 has you run into Zargonn's Tower, which is full of level 16-17 heroic monsters. The map makes it look like there's a zone entrance in there, so I tried running for it... only to have a sudden lag spike pitch me off the stairway to my death.

After that, I found a quest that involved solving a 'romeo and juliet' problem between a ratonga and a kerran. It was all talking until the end -- talk to the rat, talk to the cat, talk to the cat's father, talk to the rat's mother. The whole time, you're getting continuously jumped by the 'kerran rogues' and 'dredge scouts' that are presumably the other members of their families, and killing them off en-masse... but the flavor of the quest text is all peace and love and can't we all get along. It was pretty jarring.

Near the end, a much lower level sorcerer asked to group with me, so I said okay. We finished it off without much problem (except for the usual 'which hut had the NPC in it again? One has the NPC, two have mass death. Let's pick... this one! REE REE REE REE!) then I suggested going to the wailing cave, since I have some quests deep inside.

"Do we need a healer?"

"It couldn't hurt, but what we really need is a tank, since the beetle doesn't have taunt."

We didn't get either, though. All we got was 'in over our heads', as a random add in the middle of a battle against a pair of 'heroic' monsters resulted in the other guy dying, and me trapped in the middle of the dungeon, unable to solo back out. "Aha!" I thought, "I have that pheonix down I got last session! This is a perfect chance to... discover that it mysteriously vanished. Fuck."

Instead, the guy tried to run down through the whole dungeon, dragging them all onto me -- but EQ2's buggy but sometimes helpful combat system didn't let them attack anyone but him. Or vice versa. I tried to pull them off, but they were invulnerable to my attacks. Yes, I was still grouped with him.

So he died again, without getting his body, and now had *two* soul-shards trapped down there. Once he was dead, the enemies all turned on me, and I had to run back up out of the dungeon, escaping with about 40% life. They're 12s and I'm 17, so they don't hit hard, it's just that they're all 'heroic' so my attacks barely tickle them.

We tried about five or six times to get back down to where his body was, but the bugs were out in force. My beetle would path into the wall, the enemies would path into the wall, BOTH would path into the wall and fight it out... the enemies would NOT path into the wall but would still somehow be 'out of sight', even though they were beating on us with melee... I'd get stuck in combat mode again and again and again... I ended up dying once, he died about five or six more times. Then we gave up.

EQ2 gets buggier and buggier with every patch.

Oh, also, I made enough XP to get two new summoner spells... both are more or less identical duplicates of Static Pulse. Seriously -- I now have three different 6-10 damage, reduce target's magic mitigation by 100 DOTs. At least they stack, but come on! At least make the secondary effect different!
