Walker

The doctor's assistant's receptionist told me I should try to exercise more, 'maybe just a half hour of walking a day during lunch'. 'Just'?

So, anyway, the only time I can possibly walk anywhere while it's still daylight is either before work, or during work. Since the last thing I need is more excuses to do things other than work at work, I decided to go on a half hour walk before work, during the time when I normally play video games or read -- you know, the stuff that helps me actually wake up instead of deciding to just go back to bed and screw it.

I discovered that there's nowhere I can walk from my apartment that doesn't eventually force me to cross busy streets or scary driveways that people tear into at 20 mph. Fifteen minutes out along the path of least chance of getting run over takes me to the high school, which means I could also, in theory, walk to the grocery store, which is about the same distance in the other direction, although with much heavier traffic.

Actually walking to work would be about three or four times that distance. And I'd have to walk back. And I'd get run over and die. Not a reasonable option, which is a shame, since if it was a *useful* walk it'd seem like less of a waste of time.

A half hour walking isn't painful or anything -- it *is* short for a walk -- but it is godawful boring when you're not exploring a new area. I can't play gameboy while walking because the light is wrong -- maybe I'll be able to when it's overcast, though. Supposedly finding someone else to walk with makes it bearable, but I don't know anyone well enough that lives near enough (or that I'd want to talk to often enough) to do this with.

So, I'll try, but I suspect this is not something I can do long-term.
