With family like this...
Apr. 6th, 2003 07:16 pmToday was Loxley's online world tree game. The party went to loot the dead evil wizard's tower, but didn't realize that (a) it was guarded by real live prime guards that could not be reasonably slain without being murderers, and (b) it was still in business, under new management -- namely, House Abdergans (who they work for).
The night at the Gormorror farm passed without incident, and in the morning they walked to Gatlin, making it there by noon.
Gatlin turned out not to be a hive of scum and villainy so much as a tourist trap. After an expensive (but tasty and entertaining) meal, they were pointed towards the estate of Thimony -- sorry, make that 'Ofec the Great'. But in order to see him, they would need to provide a suitable gift... which could be found in any of the local shops.
A 'suitable gift' turned out not to be a small expensive trinket, as expected, but a massive palette of bulk goods. A metal palette, so that it could not easily be magicked. Instead it had to be carried by cart. Cart rentals were expensive, and heavily taxed.
After finding all this out, the party headed for the estate tribute-less, planning to just sneak inside since Thimony was dead and Ofec had probably not gotten back from where they'd last seen him in Treverre, since he had basically no magical abilities. The estate was walled by a powerful locador spell worthy of a wizard, however, and guarded by dangerous looking herethroy and cani guards.
As they circled around the back, not getting close enough to be seen, they found a dock jutting out into the verticals (which the estate was located near). At the dock was the Kestrel -- the fastest ship in the Abdergans fleet, which Wonkotirip recognized immediately. After discussing and rejecting several sneaky plans, they advanced openly on the Kestrel and demanded to speak to the captain, on the authority of the eldest son of the house that owned it.
The bosun didn't recognize Wonko, though, and scoffed at their demands. After a bit more posturing on the party's part, he revealed that Captain Sully and Brunotirip himself were inside discussing their business relationship with the Ofec the Magnificent scam.
Kijji, thinking that inside meant inside the ship, sent an illusion to scout the ship, and got the party thrown off the dock. No, not off the side and down into the verticals, just back onto the branch proper. They went back into hiding while the illusion (of a bright winged messenger) tried to annoy its way through the gate with no success, and talked over what this meant, if it was true -- it meant that Brunotirip was working with Ofec, whom Mikh had sworn to kill, and was aiding in this technically legal scam (the palettes of bulk goods were to be loaded onto the Kestrel and resold). It also meant that Ofec was likely already inside, having ridden home on the Kestrel.
Their indecision paid off, when as they discussed whether to head back immediately or wait for Brunotirip to emerge, he did -- with the head of the Ring of Iron at his side, both of them looking pleased as punch. Wonkotirip was all wobbly and panicky, and decided he desperately needed to warn his father about what was going on.
The party decided it was important to get back and tell their side of the story first, before Bruno could make up some way to frame them or something, since he already knew they were meddling given their lack of subtlety with the Bosun. The Kestrel was five times as fast as them, though, and would beat them easily even after loading all its cargo. So the choices seemed to be (a) stow away, (b) damage the Kestrel to slow it down, or (c) hope the Temple of Here in Gatlin could send them back.
The Temple could. It required a fiddly, specific sacrifice that was some trouble to obtain, and then charged 100 lz per person to hammer-cast 'Go Home'. Most of the party ended up in Treverre, except for Cimmenerovia who ended up in a random safe place nearby and had to be retrieved.
Hallanotirip (Wonko's father) was very angry at the news about Bruno, and paused to discuss the matter with his advisors, while the party tried to decide what needed to be done next...
last session next session
OOCly, it didn't go as well, unfortunately... Cimm and Mikh were pretty quiet, Kay didn't show up (computer trouble), and Silverspray's connection was so intermittent that he gave up halfway through. So for a good part of the game it almost felt like I was the only player. }:/
Overall it was still fun, though.
