Got Breath of Fire V for the PS2... it's... um... yeah. I don't know. I already lost once, but I get the impression you're supposed to lose a few times and start over. It's sort of how you level up.

The game is designed to make you lose. The only way to recover health is with medkits. They don't recover much health -- from killing six enemies you might be able to afford a kit that'll heal the effect of one enemy hitting you once, assuming all six enemies dropped coins. So I'm guessing bypassing enemies is the name of the game? Although of course that means no XP.

Someone called it 'Survival Horror RPG'. Not entirely inaccurate.

Also played quite a bit of AC2 last night. Started out doing the Lumari Spills undead incursion... er, that is, the Lumari Curse 'Quest'. Aheh. Got super-buffed by my allegiance (they were standing around at Zu for some reason, on the way to Linvak to hunt dillos. I can't go to Linvak yet) and managed to pick off all the skeleton riders I needed. While wandering around trying to find mobs of the other sorts to solo while avoiding the everpresent skeletons with their huge attack radius and dogged persistance, I ran into a group of people fellowing to do the quest. Joined with them for a while.

But they insisted on (a) not letting me get any kills -- well, it wasn't intentional, I just couldn't out-damage them -- and (b) fighting in an area where I was super-lagged. The super-lagged areas seem to happen at random, and aren't always in the same spot, although they'll generally be in the same spot on any given connection. So I ditched 'em and finished the quest on my own, then came back to try to help them, until I got killed again by them not paying attention... or, well, maybe we *all* were holding back on our attacks to avoid getting the kill on a skeleton we didn't need. }:)

So, armed with a new Omishan mount, I did the Great Tree quest in 15 minutes, running past dozens of fetish spawns and hunter shreths. Then I picked off Broken Totem out of spite. This time, I succeeded! Now that it's useless! Yay!

Then I went and did Lumari vault with a group of people -- with 5 level 27s it was trivial, and I feel a bit bad that I wasted my egg potion on it. 120k xp for the vault, though, which gave me level 28 easy.

I untrained missile master, because it just didn't matter anymore -- hadn't since I'd gotten my beetle, in fact -- as well as Espirit and Revitalize which seemed similarly useless. When you don't notice that you forgot to put a buff up for 10 minutes, it's pretty sad. I'm sure Espirit is really nice at the high skill levels I can't afford right now -- but for now I'll make do with Mist Boots.

And revitalize is super lame -- you're better off using SY in combat, or just standing around waiting for regen out of combat.

So, I trained Leader of the Pack and Echoed Blow. EB first, of course -- now I'm like 'DUH!' there's a triple strike up from LotP! Or maybe I can get Reap at 28? Need to check. LotP is nice, but I'm not sure it's useful. Run speed is crack, though... I might be hooked, just like SoW in EQ. I'll probably untrain one or both of them to get paragon soon, either next level or at 31.

I could get it now by untraining heal, but heal is actually useful.

Then we all mounted up (on cheap Prosper mounts) and ran over to try to kill the shrethwarden. Our first assault was... er... unsuccessful. We had a tactician along, and his walls were lifesavers -- without them we wouldn't have gotten anywhere. But it took too long to pull things back to the walls to fight them, and we eventually got eaten by things respawning behind us.

But we weren't discouraged! Well, okay, I was discouraged. But we tried again, and this time we ran into a higher level group that was totally p0wning and leeched off them until we got to the end chamber, where they got the kill on the end boss (DUH! It was hovering off the ground so melees couldn't hit it, and our group was all melee except for one mage!) and then I got killed by a respawning shreth.

Since it was 1:30 AM, I logged off at that point. Dunno, maybe the others managed to finish the quest without me.

Current vitae: 95%, I think. Current level: 28.3ish Beetle: Unable to defeat a hunter shreth 1-on-1! Go figure.
