Tonight was Dan's D+D game. He confirmed that he was never, ever going to show up to Traveller, and gave us his character sheet in case he ever got out of prison. In the game, we were supposed to trick this evil guy into helping us, but instead we sort of killed his guards and kidnapped him.

After the wyverns (whose nest was never found), the party wasn't pestered by any more random monster attacks... possibly because they finally got out of the hilly terrain. They located the supply and message drop, and soon linked up with Windward, the ranger they'd been sent to meet.

Windward told them he'd been tracking some half-orc thug and his menagerie of monsters. The caravan was well guarded by six bugbears and two trolls, as well as the thug himself. And they needed him alive. Windward suggested posing as bandits and convincing him to hire them on after they were captured.

"Um... no, that's stupid," was the general consensus. Several other 'diplomatic' angles were considered, but in the end...

After tracking the caravan to where it camped for the night, Ray'ia snuck into the camp and let loose a giant chicken. As planned, the chicken distracted the guards. Unfortunately, it distracted them by chasing Ray'ia into the woods. Fortunately, most of the guards went after her. So then the party improvised.

Ira entangled the guards who'd chased after the chicken, and accidentally slowed it down enough for Ray'ia to get away. Meanwhile, Vlad and Kelder charged in on horseback, slaying the bugbear bodyguard but failing to grab the target. They still hadn't grabbed him by the time the trolls had moved in to engage, and sensing doom, Ira ran forwards and covered the battlefield in an obscuring mist.

In the mist, Kelder and the target dueled with swords, until both decided to run away simultaneously. Vlad left his horse as a decoy for the troll, and killed the remaining non-entangled bugbear while the troll messily devoured his mount. Then Vlad, Kelder, and both trolls wandered around in the mist for a while...

Ira, meanwhile, decided to free the giant. He spoke to it and made a bargain that it would fight the trolls if it was set free. Yes, the green trolls. With long arms. He hooked a line from his pony to the lock, rode off... and stopped short as the pony completely failed to rip the anti-giant lock from the cage. Then both trolls converged on him.

Just as he was about to be eaten, Ray'ia rushed in (not seeing the trolls) and unlocked the cage. Hearing the pony's not-quite-death scream, Vlad, who'd cast endure fire and hid from the trolls he couldn't see in the mist by standing in one of the bonfires, grabbed a burning log to use as a club and ran to help. Between Vlad and the giant, with a little help from Ira (while Ray'ia fled for her life), both trolls were defeated and set on fire.

Kelder, looking for the bad guy, ran into the demonic chicken in the forest, but ran away since he was in a hurry. The cockatrice wandered off in search of easier (or perhaps, less cowardly) prey. Or maybe it just got lost.

After a few minutes, the mist and entangle faded, and the party began to loot the camp. Windward, who'd killed off all the entangled bugbears while the party screwed around with the trolls, returned to camp with the bad guy in tow, unconscious.

Without his guards, the party figured it'd be pretty easy to convince him to cooperate.

Summary: I (Vlad) killed one bugbear on the initial charge, ducked two trolls in the mist while offing another bugbear, nanced about in a bonfire, and beat a troll about the head with a burning log while he failed to connect with his flailing claws, then finished him off with a true-stike alchemist's fire from beyond his range of vision. At last, I'm the prettiest. }:)
