Last night at the Shadake game one of the players (they guy who played the ninja, I don't know his real name) let me play Asheron's Call 2 on his computer for a few minutes... it actually worked on his, and it was beautiful. [sigh]

So, anyway, today I went back to trying to get it to work on my laptop. Half the network was down, so it took about four tries to log in at all, with really bad error messages when it failed ('your password is incorrect' instead of 'we can't contact the authorization servers') and even then I couldn't connect with my old character -- it told me 'You're trying to connect with an old character'. Well, yes. That's sort of the point. And if you mean an AC1 character, GEE, I DON'T THINK ANY AC1 CHARACTERS WERE TUMEROCKS.

Anyway, I was able to enter with a new character, and figure out why I was getting the horrible lag in certain places. It looks like it was a combination of my computer's drivers sucking with certain games and AC2's more-complicated landscape, since the only way to fix it was to turn the draw distance down to 'very low'. 'Very low' is still reasonably far for fighting and stuff, but it means you often see the edge of the world instead of anything resembling a horizon, and the bottom of the sky box if you're up on even a small hill.

I was able to turn some of the other options back up, though, so the experience wasn't totally miserable. Except that the net was still jumpy and so portals were down. So was running cross country, occasionally, at random. The third time I got stuck in the middle of an open field I hit 'exit world' instead of 'lifestone recall', and the connection hung until a monster respawned nearby and killed me. How the hell can it converse with the server well enough to spawn a monster and run combat, but not well enough to log off?

I don't know why I still want to play this game. I think I'm dumb. Maybe if I'm *really* stupid, I'll buy a computer capable of actually running it well... [shiver]
