G3: Getting there...
Jan. 23rd, 2003 10:31 pmTonight was Dan's Thursday D+D. Since Lance had to leave early and basically wasn't there, we just played through the random monster attacks encountered while travelling four days through monster-infested wilderness.
After taking a few days in town to train up and (in Vlad's case) scribe spells, and get the magic keen axe blade fitted to a handle, the party was summoned once more by the town officials and given a mission: Travel for four days along a deserted road, meet up with a scout at his supply drop, then with his help track down an evil boss monster in the area, and with the monster's help infiltrate the reported city of evil that seemed to be behind the slaver orcs. It was a scouting mission, and promised to pay... well, okay, the pay sucked. But it was more than they'd make sitting on their butts.
So off they went, down the old, deserted road and into the monster-infested wilderness. The first night they were attacked by an 18-foot-tall, three-armed giant, which pummeled Kelder into the ground... he'd surely have been slain if it hadn't been for Ira's healing, which brought him back to full consciousness as the accumulated wounds had him staggered, at which point he flew into a rage and gutted the beast from crotch to sternum with the keen magic axe. Ray'ia also acquitted herself well during the battle, tumbling in and out of the monster's reach to skewer its vitals.
The monster had a scroll and a couple potions, as well as a set of magical splint armor that no one wanted. It was also covered with gems pressed into its flesh, and rings and amulets and bracelets and the like... mostly crap, but one of the gems was sufficiently valuable for Vlad to identify the potions. One was crap -- Lesser Restoration -- but the other was a 'stone salve', usable for stone skin or curing petrification.
Two nights later, as they began to approach the rendezvous, they were set upon by a pair of humongous wyverns! A poisonous stinger laid Ira low, while Ray'ia fled for the woods. Vlad cast a shield to protect himself, and Kelder quickly smeared himself with stone-salve, which probably saved the entire party as the raging barbarian with the huge axe managed to attract most of the beasts' attention.
Kelder and Vlad (with a little help from Ray'ia) managed to gradually wear down the first wyvern, which had landed to sting and bite while the second did fly-bys with its claws, trying to snatch up Vlad but being stymied by his shield (but nearly killing him with the few sporadic scrapes it managed to land). Kelder's stone skin proved impenetrable to the wyvern's sting.
Then the second wyvern landed, screeching in rage and throwing Vlad to the side with a offhand wing-slap while it raced after Kelder... Vlad tossed a couple javelins into its side, and then Kelder cut its head off with one massive swing.
It was clear that without the stone skin, Kelder would have died three times over, and the rest of the party wouldn't have lasted long against the deadly sting. But they were victorious, and Ira frantically sucked the poison from his own wound, managing to survive by the skin of his teeth. Vlad, with some experience in alchemy, cut off the wyvern stingers for later distillation or sale.
last week next session
Afterwards, this being a game between co-workers, there was a loud argument about whose application was lamer.
