Deus Ex Machina
Jan. 21st, 2003 11:05 pmTonight was Lance's Traveller game, moved to Tuesdays semi-permanently because Lance doesn't think he can always make it Thursdays. Dan didn't show up today, either, or call ahead to say he wouldn't. A perfect 0% attendance!
As far as the game is concerned, a problem that threatened to kill the party miraculously (and illogically) solved itself, then we were welded to a boxcar and rolled down the rails to a distant star system, where there be robots.
Who knew? Killer hiver nanites disintegrated instantly upon going into hyperspace! Apparently, the fugitive stranger didn't know, since he didn't stop AKI from firing up the jump drive and disintegrating him. And apparently, Cuckoo wasn't as infected as he'd been told, because instead of being killed when the nanites that had replaced his brain went away, he was somehow cured.
Pfeh.
Anyway, with that problem solved for them, AKI had to deal with what Whitmore had done to them in the two weeks they'd been gone -- steal everything else they owned (including the APC they'd left floating in space) and kidnap another of their team members, this time officially at least. Although with a court date set for 8 months in the future, it was clear what he really wanted to do.
Spot was very happy to learn that she'd managed to kill a bunch of Whitmore employees with her random firing at the spaceyard, and vowed to kill the rest as soon as she could get around to it.
She didn't get her chance, though -- Lord Grey instead hired the group to check out a colony his distant ancestors had founded, paying them with a jump drive, supplies, and the services of a qualified engineer. Working for barter sucks, especially after your bank account's been drained.
So they vooped off to the system with the colony in it, which looked deserted except for an SOS from an apparently abandoned moon base. The moon base was full of killer robots, of course, so AKI decided to waltz in and kill them. The robots were strong enough to scuttle through the air vents, and strong enough to instantly open and close doors it took AKI about a minute to crank open, so the assault was kind of an abject failure, considering that the robots were able to injure Cuckoo and sabotage the shuttle AKI had come down in without even getting shot at.
Of course, the robots didn't know AKI had plenty of other ships on board the carrier (officially named the Chupacabra, by the way), and called the pilot to send one down to pick them up and tow the shuttle back up to be repaired.
They had some loot to examine, and some language samples to analyze and translate, and some team members to stick in the autodoc, but they also had two weeks before they'd have to head back, so there was time to regroup before assaulting the base again.
