Well, I guess *you* wouldn't be surprised that we played D+D today. But this is the off week, so we shouldn't have -- except that Jurann finally started a 'dungeon delve'. He had seven players lined up, so I wasn't going to get to play, but then two of them cancelled and one of the others was unable to figure out how to install the character builder, and told me I could have his spot.
Well, I already sort of knew what I wanted to do, so I threw (back) together Kijji the kobold rogue, dual-wielding daggers, a sexless, shifty god of war. At least, in the ONE battle we got through.
We also had a dragon-pact sorceror (an arcane striker, previewed from PHB2), a dragonborn swordmage, an eladrin 'control' wizard (with thunderwave and cloud of daggers as his at-wills), and a laser laser LASER cleric. Who was a minotaur for some reason.
"Okay, you all know each other, and agreed to take on this job -- you're blah blah blah blah tracked them to this dungeon. Oh, and they want you to recover their precious artifact."
"What is it?"
"They didn't tell you anything about it."
"How are we supposed to recognize it, then?"
"Oh, it's an amulet dedicated to their god, who's probably Pelor judging from the church in town."
Kijji decided to try to sneak up on the door to the dungeon and check it for traps, but it wasn't really very sneaky, and ended up setting off the noise trap, alerting the enemies inside. "Um... I think it's safe for the dragonborn to rush in now."
The dragonborn did not rush in. The enemies did not rush out. Tentatively, the party opened the doors to the dungeon and walked inside, staying in the pool of light from outside, making them totally visible but also unable to see the enemies, except for Kijji who could see in the dark. It crept farther in, and spotted some enemies, who could obviously see the party just fine, but were waiting instead of attacking.
After trying repeatedly to goad its friends into attacking or at least lighting a torch, Kijji turned on one of its sunrods and tossed it like a flare into the enemy formation. This blinded and surprised the enemies, and the party charged!
There were only two obvious enemies, and one of them was bloodied by repeated sneak-attack dagger-throws before he even got to move. The rest of the party focused fire on the archer in the back instead, except for the sword-mage who had no choice but to fight the brute in front -- but when he moved up to attack it, out lept a pair of berzerkers, hacking at him with axes! OH, THE PAIN!
While the rest of the party did help considerably, and managed to take down the hobgoblin archer by themselves, Kijji did end up getting the killing blow on all three of the goblins, while the dragonborn swordmage did his job by attracting all the attention from all of the enemies for pretty much the entire fight -- and whining about it the whole time. "I'm down to 8 hit points! Out of 40!" "That means you're doing your job!" "How come no one else even got hurt?" "Because you're doing your job!" "I didn't even get to do any damage to the enemies!" "You just did like 20 damage this turn, total!" "Yeah, but none of them died!"
Afterwards, they rested up and looted the room (not finding much), and Kijji opened the double doors at the far end of the room. There was a crossroads, with another pair of double doors immediately across from the first pair, and only one way to go otherwise that wasn't collapsed. Thinking that it probably led nowhere, Kijji crept forwards as far as it could manage without getting too far out of line of sight, but the rubble made it hard to see, so it lied to the party that it was all clear, so that the minotaur cleric would bring up the sunrod.
...which meant the whole party stepped in the bear traps at about the same time. KACHUNK. But they set off all the traps, and freed the lame cleric, and Kijji snuck up a little farther, to see two goblins waiting in ambush for the party to come around the next corner.
"If they don't see me, can I sneak attack them?"
"Sure."
...but it was getting kind of late, so we stopped before doing that fight. Which looked like it was going to start with a kobold getting gang-banged by all the enemies it had failed to beat on intiative, after thunking one of them solidly with a thrown dagger.
