Also, I cheated in Disgaea DS -- I looked on gamefaqs for the code to start in Etna mode (instead of starting it from a new game+ like you're supposed to). The premise is that Etna actually manages to kill Laharl instead of waking him up, and so you go through the entire game without him. The cutscenes are all different (she's trying to pass a prinny off as the prince, but it doesn't work) but there isn't much of a plot really. At least not so far.
But it's neat, because (a) without Laharl, you're missing your strongest unit (by FAR), and (b) the level designs are... um... a little sadistic. Just a little, though, and there's generally a way to use them to your advantage. You just have to work at it a little more.
