Friday night we had a session of the Shadake game.

The Church of Starlight turned out to be well protected -- lots and lots of guards, and no easy way to sneak inside even after having Bob put a trademark Eternal Void SEP field on them.

So Mira made sure the resistance heard about the situation, while the party tried to infiltrate the complex dressed as guards -- it was easier to appear insignificant in a secured area if you looked like some of the people securing it. The resistance dropped meteors on the whole complex, but for the most part Kit's bubbles held, and the distraction let them run inside along with everyone else.

Once inside, they joined a patrol going down into the dungeons (where the map seemed to indicate the fountain was) and ran smack dab into the emporer. And Adam. Cho instantly reacted by blasting Adam (and the emporer, and the priests frantically trying to heal the emporer) with astral lightning, killing the emporer and really pissing Adam and the priests off.

With his new staff, Kit managed to counterspell the head priest's first counterattack, and Mira and Leen started blasting the priests and guards while Cho faced off with Adam, somehow just barely managing to dodge each ludicrously powerful strike... until finally, a desperate Adam managed to touch him with a blow, and even that glancing hit paralyzed him with dispair and depression...

Which Kit absorbed from him, allowing him to take out both Adam (with more soul blasts) and the high priest (by changing the shape of his weapons instead of trying to resist the priest stealing it) while Kit lamented that he was unable to die, and otherwise got very emo.

Then they headed for the fountain, after animating the dead emporer to go fight his own troops (and after Mira looted him of all his possessions while Kit wallowed in despair and Cho and Leen made sure Adam was dead dead). There were some magical barriers, but those weren't that hard to bypass, and the fountain... had been turned into a production line for healing potions. So they took some healing potions, along with some of the raw time water (Bob drank a little, but nothing obvious happened).

And then they tried to find the orb. Oh look, there on the map -- a room with no entrances? Cho scouted it out, and yeah, it was full of loot. So they opened a portal to Cho while he was inside, and Kit plastered himself onto the giant ball of 'solid' mana. And dumped out a box full of coal to store all the other artifacts in, since they were part of his hoard now and no one else was allowed to touch or use them.

After *barely* resisting dumping everything (including the orb) into the inescapable 'hoard' in Mirnath's old lair, he decided that being a dragon was more trouble than it was worth... and with the power of the sphere, he really could be anything he wanted. Well, as long as it was human -- he wasn't good enough to circumvent his curse, even with the sphere boosting him. [it let him get level 27 successes with a normal roll and 5 rounds of casting, the curse had somehow been cast at level 42! This is on a scale where 'fireball' is level 6 and 'wish' is level 14...] So he made himself into a human who looked a lot like a kitsune... with a pouch, so that he could hide the sphere in it. Well, hide the sphere in a mezukuma box in it, since the sphere was 2 feet in diameter.

As a side effect, this made him a girl dingo-fox-morph type of human. He hadn't intended that, but she didn't really care about gender enough to bother shapeshifting again.

And she couldn't draw full power from it that way, but she could still draw a LOT of power. Anyone in the room could draw a LOT of power. This was a problem. Shielding the sphere was nearly fatal -- it maintained its power by sucking in mana from the rest of the universe, and when shielded it instead tried to consume and annihilate any magic inside the shield with it (and Kit was made out of holy magic). So she warded it against detection instead -- now at least evil wizards walking next to her wouldn't see it and know they could draw tons of power from it. She hoped. Mira couldn't sense it through the shield, at least.

So... what next? Well, they wanted to bind Vaal, of course, but they didn't know the binding spell. Ethelred (not Ebereth, although I keep forgetting the name, sorry) knew the spell, maybe they could charm him into teaching it to them? He was bound to have defenses, though, so they'd need to find a time when he wasn't paying attention to his defenses to charm him... was there anything in the other artifacts that could help with that?

No, but there was a copy of a powerful binding spell, that even with the sphere Kit could just barely cast. That would do. And she knew what she *thought* (and Cho confirmed) was Vaal's true name (Enveloping Concordance) from Quinn listing the people who knew the spell that could contain a god.

So with Cho and Bob helping, she cast the ritual... and Vaal resisted it. She tried again, harder... and Vaal resisted it again, and teleported Ethelred right to them, to kill them presumably.

So she tried to teleport to safety in the field of flowers, the ancient hideaway warded against scrying... but forgot not to use the staff, so Ethelred was able to hitch a ride along with them -- she wouldn't be able to use the staff against Ethelred, who'd crafted it, of course.

She could still use the sphere, though... so maybe they had a chance.

Lazar had been thinking of having the Fountain of Time take us to Disc 2 of the campaign, set in the far future... but decided that he'd rather try to bring it to a reasonably quick conclusion. Obviously not as quick as Kit had hoped, though!
