Back in the Frying Pan
Dec. 21st, 2002 09:39 pmToday was Tom's RttToEE game, moved from Sunday due to family visiting him tomorrow. Together with the other party, we re-entered the dungeon, survived a dead enemy's parting gift, and killed some stuff. Tenaris is still not dead.
Travelling back to the crater proved uneventful, the invisible assassins having apparently fucked off after their many failed attempts to hurt the party and the recent death of their immediate superior. Not particularly wanting to beat around the bush, the party walked up to the front door of the air temple and knocked. After ignoring a bit of lying, they persuaded the gnolls to run away so that they could corner the high priestess of Air in her chambers and convince her to bless their key again, so that they could re-enter the inner fane.
No, really, no one even had to draw a weapon. The air temple remained sufficiently cowed, especially since the party was up to thirteen members, plus a giant wolf and wolverine, and a hawk, and a pseudo dragon. Plus, thanks to the ring of spell storing, *two* of the party were trolls.
No one else in the outer fane wanted to fuck with the party either, at least not after Thanos and the Barracas (a dwarf fighter from the other party) killed a few of them, so they proceeded relatively unopposed to the air bridge, whereupon they sprung a fiendish trap.
Someone had cast a Symbol of Discord, right in the keyhole of the door at the end of the air bridge! It was a powerful symbol too, and only Mepechu and Celeste (a half-dragon mage from the other party) managed to keep their heads while the rest of the party took to bickering.
Mepechu dispelled the symbol, but it was too late -- the bickering rose in volume, and finally the party came to blows! Spells exploded, swords flashed, arrows flew... but before anyone could actually get themselves killed, everyone came to their senses, and Mepechu and Bella healed the many, many wounds inflicted in the short battle.
Then, over the objections of the fighters and mages who were still ready to go, the party holed up in a room near the bridge to rest and recover. Rule number 1: The cleric decides when to rest.
They weren't disturbed, and everyone in the dungeon knew that the air bridge was closed due to Symbol, and in the morning they approached the door and entered the Inner Fane once more. They hadn't gotten fifty feet when they were jumped by a flock of invisible stalkers. The party was prepared for dealing with invisible creatures, however, and between Marcus' and Celeste's See Invisibles and fireballs, Mepechu's animal companions who could sniff out the enemy, and an eventual Major Image which pointed out where all the enemies were lurking, the stalkers were taken down before they could do much damage, although plenty of magic was expended.
The next barrier was a wall of stone. Thanos and Mepechu, both with Polymorph Self up, changed briefly into Umber Hulks and crunched through the barrier.
Then the party opened a door they'd bypassed earlier and found a 10-foot by 10-foot room, in which lived a very ugly, very strong, very *large* woman and a troll, both with hideous metallic skin. They were chopped to bits, but not before triggering the mechanism in the room and revealing it to be a teleporter with what looked like a dozen possible destinations.
Marcus, Mepechu and Thanos examined the dead woman. Marcus indicated that she was a horrible creature known as an Aniss Hag. Mepechu and Thanos noted how tough her skin was, and how strong she'd been, and decided that she'd be a better polymorph-self target than a mere troll.
But where to go next? Through the teleporters, or continue around the ring?
