Ruin Britannia, Britannia Ruin the World
Oct. 4th, 2007 03:05 pmNot the real world, though -- the alternate dragon-infested world of the Temeraire books. When I got home last night, Empire of Ivory was waiting for me in an amazon package, and... er... I started reading it around 11pm, and lost track of time. I really need to stop reading the good books in one sitting.
Anyway, beneath the story about dragons all over the world and how they change things, it's a *way* harsh critique of Napoleon-era Great Britain. All the protagonists are British and (mostly) loyal to Britain and (mostly) good people, but between the slave trade, the callous disregard for dragon welfare, and the bizarrely screwed-up social conventions and politics, I'm *really* rooting for Napoleon to win this time.
The teaser at the end hinted that he'd try to invade in the next volume... c.c
