Nosy Adventurers
Sep. 17th, 2007 10:20 amSticking it in where it don't belong... er, that is, Sunday we had a session of Eric' Eberron campaign, in which we decided to scour the temple for additional treasure, since we'd basically skipped to the end.
The foray into the temple didn't start well.
"We're not stealthy, so we might as well just go in the slave entrance, that's sized for us."
Unfortuantely, that was what the remaining drow had expected them to do, and a giant boulder was waiting for them to get about halfway up the stairs before it was pushed down. Heyyou tried to catch it, but only managed to catch it right in the face. Most of the others had no choice but to flatten themselves to the sides of the stairwell and let it scrape past, and got battered to a greater or lesser degree depending on how poorly they did so. Cht'cht jumped over the boulder, easily, and landed right in the middle of the drow warriors following it down. Oops!
So while Zeffy and Kaevan (Efneisien was in berzerker mode for some reason) and Heyyou fought their way through the main body of warriors, Cht'cht had to fight all the drow who were waiting in line. By himself. Well, Ignacious summoned a crocodile to help him, but it wasn't enough to keep him from being taken down.
Luckily for him, he managed to hold out long enough -- Ignacious covered him with a bewildering cloud to force the enemies to scatter instead of coup-de-gracing him, and the rest of the party was right there to finish them off as they scattered.
With no cleric (Moroni had gone home, and Efneisien was currently being a berzerker and pretending not to be a cleric) it was use-magic-device time on the various wands of healing, since most everyone had gotten hurt from the boulder or the fight or both.
Apparently, those drow had been the only survivors, or at least the only survivors who'd hung around -- their city had been burned to the floor by the Emerald Claw two days ago, and nothing was left on that level. The party decided to try heading up the back stairs of the giant temple, since they seemed to go to a lower floor, instead of the moer obvious front stairs.
Fortunately, the back door was locked. Unfortunately, there was a mechanism set up to winch it open. Fortunately, it was incomplete. Unfortunately, Ignacious was smart enough to figure out how to put it together. Fortunately, the party noticed that the door wasn't just *stuck*, it was *airtight*, and hung way back while Heyyou (who was immune to poison) operated the winch. Unfortunately, it wasn't really airtight. It was watertight. And even hanging way back left them on the stairs... so for the second time that morning, they went falling down the stairs, getting all battered.
Behind the door was a large, dark, empty room, with two feet of water on the floor -- apparently, there was a source of water continuously refilling it. A little searching found a portal to the plane of elemental water... but before they could investigate it much, a single undead wandered up to molest them... and half the party nearly died instantly, forced to save -- sorry, make a *CON check* -- against immediate drowning from the undead's aura before they could even act.
Luckily, Kaevan still had a scroll of water breathing from the time on the boat, and even in berzerk mode was able to use magic items like scrolls. Thus protected, they were able to... well, actually, it still took a while to finish off the Drowned. He was tough, although not quite as tough as the giant warforged had been.
After he was dead, there wasn't anything else in the whole huge, empty level, except some runes in Giant (Zeffy used a scroll of comprehend languages, but that just made them gibberish in Common) and the portal. Since they were breathing water anyway, Zeffy had Heyyou stick her through (against the very strong current) to see if there was a matching temple on the other side, but there wasn't -- just empty water for as far as she could see.
Apparently, this was nothing but a giant magical extraplanar cistern... and the only treasure on the whole level was the undead's golden collar which would *almost* pay for the scroll of water breathing.

Eric wanted to know what people wanted to do next -- he was thinking of turning the campaign into D+D stargate. I mentioned that I *was* enjoying playing Zeffy, but wasn't so sure I wanted to do *another* stargate campaign, since I'd been in half a dozen already, and the one I was running myself on Fridays was in danger of turning into one.
Shawn mentioned 'snow' as a theme he'd want to explore, so in theory that'll be the theme of the next adventure, after we finish looting the temple. Where in Eberron do you find snow, though?
