Friday we had a horrible session of the shadake game I've been trying to run. I didn't prepare very much, and utterly failed to come up with anything when the party quickly blew through the stuff I'd given the slightest thought to.
While Lissar was busy getting kidnapped, Caihong and Eric were trying to sneak into the restricted area of the ship. So when someone ran out of the restricted area in a panic, they took the opportunity to run past... well, Eric got past. Caihong got caught, but got free and ran off in the other direction, and the guard decided that Eric was the one who needed to be caught right away.
Eric managed to get into the telegraph room, and quickly came up with an innocent-sounding note to send to 'his mother'. 'My brother was left behind at the castle, and he's scared of ghosts.' He managed to give it to the people working the telegraph before the guard caught him and dragged him off -- it sounded like they were going to send it, although of course he wouldn't be able to get any response.
So it was all up to Jana to save Lissar -- a contingent of guards were called up from the training barracks to deal with a rampaging bear in the cargo hold, so Jana went with them to see what was up. To her, it was obvious -- Lissar was being kidnapped, and the bear was trying to stop the kidnappers, but security was assuming he was just freaking out for no reason and trying to stop him. Luckily, no one was using lethal force...
Jana tried attacking the kidnappers, but there were too many of them, so instead she screamed 'kidnappers!' until some of the security guards noticed what was going on. Security didn't beleive her -- she wasn't even human -- but the kidnappers were forced to come up with an excuse for having an unconscious girl on the spot, and said they were taking her to the doctor. Jana threatened to fight if they didn't send some other guards to take her to the doctor to make sure she really got there, and wanted them to arrest the kidnappers... they agreed to the first condition but not the second.
The doctor, of course, recognized chloroform in no time, so the security guy in charge sent a message through the speaking tubes for the men he'd had following the kidnappers to put them in the brig. Unfortunately, they'd managed to give their watchers the slip.
Jana started insulting the guards and calling them incompetent, so all the kids ended up being confined to quarters, except for Taegan.
Taegan was in the lab, working with Lord Wright himself, who'd wanted to show Taegan the Forbidden Device that he wasn't allowed to work on. He being Lord Wright -- forbidden by the Order of the Shattered Blade, who claimed it was an interdimensional portal device. "They have an aletheometer, so they'd know if I broke my word not to work on it." He hoped that perhaps Taegan would be able to figure it out and perfect his infinite energy machine.
Then he launched into a spiel about why the Order's whole mission was stupid -- so opening portals created evil spirits, that was hardly an insolvable problem. And if there was some other, worse effect from it, surely that should be treated as an obstable to overcome rather than as a reason to just give up and ignore all the potential benefit... Taegan was of no mind to argue with him, being in agreement on all points.
But then the guards came to grab Taegan and confine him with the other kids ('for their own safety'). Wright grilled him about the whole situation, and told them to have the kids confined in his suite -- it was a lot larger and more comfortable, not to mention more secure.
So they spent the rest of the day there, working on their theories, staring out the window. "Why are we going in circles?" Looking for exits. "These air ducts *might* be big enough... but we'd have to pry off all the paneling, so he'd notice the damage." Or just being bored.
Eventually, Lord Wright came to go to bed, while Eric was staying up on watch (the kids had set a watch, because they suspected that they were in enemy territory). Eric tried to get him to answer various questions, like 'why are we going in circles'. The answer to that one was 'where else would we go? We're staying in international waters near Scotland while we carry out business with the branch offices there.'
Again, he promised them that their message had been sent, and that they'd be informed of any instructions given in a reply. Eric asked if they could be dropped off somewhere, and he said 'maybe, it depends.'
Then, later, someone else was caught trying to sneak into the room while Caihong was on watch, but they didn't get past the guards outside, making the encounter completely pointless.

Next week is a furry con, so I'll have two weeks to try to do better for next time.
