World of Warcraft has a truly sadistic Valentines' day event going. You buy perfume and little valentines day cards, then go around to NPCs with hearts floating over their head, and they either give you a box full of goodies -- including one of a card, pledge of loyalty, or romantic poem, and two friendship bracelets -- or 'break your heart' and make you hang out by the bank yelling for people to give you a friendship bracelet to make you feel good again before you can continue participating in the event.

There's about a fifty-fifty chance of each.

If you get five of a kind, you can combine cards, pledges, and poems into 'packs of cards', 'books of poems', etc. Then, you can combine all that into a 'gift collection'. For that city. Repeat this for all the cities, and you get a gift collection for the horde. THEN -- I think, I didn't get nearly that far -- you can go turn it in to complete the v-day quest, which also involves running all over the world, so only high-level characters need apply.

The v-day patch also introduced a game-breaking bug where an enemy will appear rooted in place on your client, while actually running up and hitting you in-game. So, you can't activate your powers unless they're in range of where the enemy appears to be (the client stops you) and they won't actually hit unless you're in range and pointed at where they actually are (the server stops you) so you usually have to either run away or die. Even if you win you won't be able to loot the body (since 'loot corpse' is effectively a melee-range power).

I guess it's not *really* game-breaking, since it doesn't happen *that* often. Still, ARGH.

CoH has a much less sadistic v-day event, that involves going to pocket D and screaming for a cross-faction team to complete the various quests five times, to get assorted rewards -- mostly badges, but also some costumes. It's basically the same one from last year, only with the reward scheme of this year's christmas event.

Their v-day patch also introduced a game-breaking bug where, for no discernable reason, you'll suddenly start getting more and more lag until (after about five minutes of not being able to do anything) you're disconnected from the server. It happened to me on the third mission I went into, which was also a timed 'argh now I'll have to do five paper missions to get another one of these and get the explore badge and power' mayhem. From what people are saying, it doesn't seem to have anything to do with your connection speed -- it happens to people with DSL and cable as much as to dialup users. That isn't really much consolation.
