Tonight was Lance's D+D game. We fought our way through many perils to what we expected to be a stronghold of evil, only to be offered a job. And immortality.

After showing the mayor of the town to his vault, and being knighted and given the run of the town, and resting, and leveling up, and identifying some magical items, and getting a call on the beeper of evil (which was fed to the dire wolverine), the party set out for the keep of the Lords of the Vale, where they probably should have gone in the first place.

On the way up, they were attaked by a flock of Pteryons, goat-horned eagle things. The samurai, monk, and dire wolvering proved their worth, while the shaman, druid, and wizard proved their worthlessness. The wizard was hit once and nearly killed, but managed to escape by turning into a raven (using the magical cloak taken from the 'evil black bird' from the manor) and cowering in the trees. The druid mainly egged on his dire wolverine and defended himself.

The enemies were defeated fairly easily, although several party members were wounded, including, unfortunately, the wolverine, which flew into a rage. Unlike the rage of a friendly barbarian, the rage of a friendly wolverine is extremely unfriendly, at least once the actual enemies are gone and the wolverine is still angry. Fortunately, the druid was powerful enough to turn his own companion (using Animal Defiance) until the rage wore off, so no one was eaten.

Eventually, the party came to a bridge, a narrow, slippery bridge over a very deep chasm, guarded by more pteryons. They decided to travel across it invisibly, which meant leaving the horses behind, althogh the samurai and the druid insisted on bringing their warhorse and wolvering respectively. Unfortunately, while the invisibility protected them from the pteryons, it didn't protect them from the trap.

The samurai plummeted to his doom, only to be saved by a quick featherfall from the mage. Of course, this took him out of the invisibility sphere, and the pteryons attacked. The samurai, while gently floating to the base of the chasm, managed to take out all five pteryons essentially on his own, with only a little help from the monk firing arrows.

The druid told his wolverine to go wait in the woods while he wild-shaped into an eagle and flew down to join the samurai on the long ride back around. By the time they'd gotten back up, the rest of the party had found the lever to control the bridge, so the druid went and retrieved his wolverine, which had eaten the party's horses. Yay! Another day's food taken care of!

That left the party standing before a locked door. The druid, still wild-shaped, had a ring of knock, which he attempted to use on the door. It didn't work, so he went off to find another entrance.

The rest of the party rang the doorbell, and got to fight a pair of minotaurs. That was the last battle, as the rest of the complex was uninhabited. There was another locked door that the knock ring failed to open, and a 'trap' consisting of a three foot high pile of VERY rotting corpses that even the wolverine wouldn't eat, but nothing dangerous.

Then they were met by a ghost who gave them a history lesson and swore them in as immortal protectors of the vale, to defend against the rogue protector who'd turned evil and killed the last group of immortal protectors, and revealed that the village and wildlife they'd sworn to protect was just a cover for a group of drow living in the underdark below.

But they were good drow, so it was okay.
