Had a session of Lazar's Shadake game, in which the situation between the centaurs and the butterflies (which are Vlindar, not Glazends, after all) was clarified.

In the morning, Balthazaar and his students met at the inn for 'tea' (with drugs) and 'coffee' (with alcohol). They decided to split up so that (a) they could cover more of the city in what might be a limited amount of time, and (b) they probably wouldn't all be rounded up and arrested at the same time. Although Balthazaar told Wayne that plan B was *not* to burn down the city to rescue him. More like plan D.

The idea they settled on was to try to pass themselves off as being from elsewhere on the island without actually saying anything about it, and to sort of imply that someone else had examined the technology and determined that it wasn't magic. In support of that, they needed to know about the island's culture and maybe, you know, the name of the city they were in and of some other city. Also, it'd be nice to know what the people here actually needed, since they didn't seem to be in dire need of food processors.

It was also pretty obvious, looking around, that the Vlindars were not just second class citizens, but actually slaves of the centaur lords. They were doing all the real work, and bought and sold as property...

Perrel went to go check out the city's medical technology, to see if maybe he could offer his services or something. The actual medical facility was centaurs only, though, and he was thrown out. He did find a Vlindar apothecary on the outskirts of town, but it was sort of disguised and unofficial... and seemed like it might be using magic. The herbalist there quickly deduced that he'd come in an airship, and hinted that he'd better take her with him or else she'd arrange for it to be stolen or something. As he left (not agreeing to any such thing) she apparently had him followed.

Jardin entered himself in the games, sort of unintentionally. He'd been sent to go find out what sort of competition it was, but they assumed he was trying out, and he sort of went along with it. After coming in 5th during the archery competition (he'd trained throwing his naginata, and javelin throwing was half the score) he tried to throw the race -- he was *way* faster than anyone else -- by waiting at the finish line for everyone else to catch up, but that just earned him 'coup' points. After the race, he was in second place. And the top two finishers got to take their first wives! Yay! He still had the sparring matches to lose points, though.

Wayne, of course, was sent to the judge to ask for permission to sell their magitech. He was kept waiting for a long time, as every centaur who came along was put ahead of him in line. He chatted a bit with one of the centaurs who actually had to wait, who assumed he was a slave, and wondered where he could find slaves as loyal as Wayne and his friends. "It's really more a quality of the master than the slave."

Eventually, he did get to see the judge. He explained that the stuff they were selling wasn't magitech. The food processors used bacteria -- like the yeast the winemakers made. He himself had figured out how to make floatvine keep floating after death... Perrel knew how to enhance medicines using special techniques. Nothing magical at all, really!

The judge wanted a demonstration, so he had to go back to the ship and get a food processor. With flight and a manta (kept out of sight so that it wouldn't get shot) he managed to get one back reasonably quickly. Not quick enough not to have to wait behind another centaur, though. He hadn't thought to bring anything to demonstrate it on, but the just had food waste... and apparently, a bottle of poison, set out on the table next to all the food (there were refreshments in the 'courtroom'). The judge was impressed by the way the poison was separated out, and gave Wayne permission to hawk the things that night at the Deeman estate.

It was easy to find Jardin -- his stripes really stood out -- and they ran into Balthazaar and Perrel soon enough and compared notes. Balthazaar had discovered some city names, and that the lord of the village closest to the big deserted tower in the middle of the island had a library full of books that, as far as anyone knew, were still unopened.

They decided to watch Jardin spar, and unfortunately, he picked the wrong matches to throw (not wanting to throw *all* of them) and ended up in first place after the whole competition. He caught a brief glimpse of his future wife -- bright white, with pretty pink tail and mane... aww, how precious.

last sesion | next session

Since I'm going to be gone for the next two weeks (starting next friday, sigh) Lazar said they'd start the underwater campaign that was planned as a backup option. Supposedly, Java'll be back by the time I'm back in town...
