We had the last session of Jeff's star wars game. It's the last session for several reasons: all of us were getting sick of it, Patrick wanted to try a stint as GM, and everybody died and/or turned to the dark side.
By the skin of their teeth, and with the assistance of NPC rebels who died, the three jedi had just barely managed to take out the mining facility, and were now prepared -- if you could call it that -- to assault the main fortress of the empire on Mon Calamari -- the shipyard. There were about fifteen thousand enemy soldiers on the base, but if they managed to keep a low profile, they thought they might not have to fight *all* of them... most were on the surface, and would be killed automatically when their mission succeeded as the shipyard sank back below the waves.
The initial insertion was promising and worrying at the same time -- the processing facility where their ore cart docked seemed shut down and damaged, with signs of a recent battle. R4 accessed the computers in a side room and informed them that the security systems in the levels they'd have to travel to were disabled, and they didn't sense any life on the other side of the main door, so they headed deeper in.
Behind the second door, they sensed a living creature (and several dead ones), so they prepared for battle, hit the button to rotate the door, and were all knocked unconscious by a volley of stun grenades [as every party member lost initiative to every enemy].
Ed: "When I asked for a TPK, I didn't expect it to happen in the first room..."
Fortunately, stun grenades don't keep your stunned for long, and Druu Kai woke up before the enemy could close to coup-de-grace anyone. This made him the target of massive blaster cannon from the back ranks and shock rods from the front ranks, but he managed to survive until Kunda and (eventually) Kuu were conscious.
The three jedi were doing okay against the shock-rod wielders -- except for Kuu, who tried attacking the weapons instead of the people since the people had a lot of vitality, and was rewarded by getting to see just how many backup weapons these people carried -- but the blaster folk in back started taking careful aim. Oh no! More guided missiles?
Kuu rushed across the room and failed to cut the blaster in two, but luckily it wasn't missiles after all, it was just essentially-true-striking blaster shots. If he'd put up an illusion to block their aim, that would have worked, but he hadn't because he'd assumed missiles. Doh.
At that point, Druu Kai finished off the last meleer and Kunda and Kuu and Sepna took out the blaster people. The last tried to run away, but was cut down from behind. Everyone was hideously wounded and essentially out of vitality, but Kuu convinced them to continue on to the first control room at least -- after that they'd be crawling through the air ducts, which would be a much safer place to rest.
They also had Kolto with them, which helped considerably, although the addicts devoured their entire supply instantly, even though they'd brought multiple doses...
R4 was able to easily activate the controls, and they travelled slowly down the three kilometer air tube to the second control room, taking extra time to heal up. That control room was also empty, so they moved on to the rear of the facility, where they needed to repair main engineering before heading on to the main control room where they could sink the facility. Somewhere along the way, they lost Sepna, although he could just be 'immersing' himself. Kuu had just learned how to do that, but unlike Sepna couldn't keep it up indefinately [because he didn't have the master illusionist feat].
There were kolto tanks just outside engineering, so they ate more kolto (which had no effect, it only works once a day) to give them courage before assaulting the facility. The initial plan was to hide behind cover (which was waaay back) and have Kuu send an illusionary doppelganger to push the button and open the door.
Unfortuantely, the door was locked, and R4 refused to go up alone to unlock it. So Kuu went with him... immersed and invisible. So, R4 was the only target the stormtroopers saw when they opened the door, and was well and truly ionized, and then Druu Kai threw a black-lightning ion grenade into the room to take out the stormtroopers and hopefully the pair of dark jedi inside.
Instead, he took out the stormtroopers and Kuu -- or at least, he made Kuu visible and destroyed all his equipment except for two of his four lightsabers -- lightsabers got saves -- and stripped about a quarter of his vitality. The dark jedi were completely unhurt.
Me: "I really hope that wasn't the control room we were supposed to fix."
Jeff: "Oh, it was."
Me: "I guess it's not like we still had R4 to fix it, anyway."
One of the dark jedi spent the round doing the battlemind+enhance ability dance, but the other blasted Kuu with force lightning, nearly killing him (except that he spent a force point to make the otherwise impossible save). Then, turrets popped out of the ceiling in the corridor (the ones in the room at least were destroyed) and shot Kuu in the back repeatedly, taking away most of the rest of his vitality.
So when Kunda rushed in to melee the dark jedi, Kuu wasn't a lot of help as he couldn't risk taking an AoO from their reach weapons. He tried destroying weapons again, but they were shielded against lightsabers, and eventually immersed himself just to keep from dying. Druu Kai, meanwhile, was completely occupied taking out the turrets with levitated ion grenades -- and Kunda, while the strongest of the group in melee combat by far, was no match for *two* dark jedi, and was quickly forced to flee to the Kolto tank room. One of them followed him in and shut the door, while the other looked around for Kuu and Druu Kai (who was still essentially hiding).
Kuu saw his chance, and popped out of invisibility to get some sneak attacks in (not that he actually had sneak attack). While not as strong with his lightsabers as the weapon masters, he was pretty good, and managed to get a solid hit in on the dark jedi after stripping away the last of his vitality... which had absolutely no effect, except to heal his target slightly.
Kuu: "OMGWTF? Did you just absorb my lightsaber?"
DJ: *zap*
Kuu: *dies*
In the kolto room, the other dark jedi was trying to convert Kunda to the dark side, promising to spare his companions if he did (although, of course, they'd have to join too). Kunda tried to bluff him by agreeing insincerely, but didn't succeed. Druu Kai then killed the jedi who'd taken down Kuu by dropping the ceiling on him -- not energy damage, so it actually worked.
Druu Kai: "I'm sure Kuu would rather die than be captured."
Kuu: "I suppose that's the impression I would have been trying to give you."
However, move object is a move action, so as a side task he also managed to snatch the only-mostly-dead Kuu out of the way so he didn't get squished along with the dark jedi... but the remaining dark jedi then simply force choked Druu Kai to mostly-death, and repeated his offer to Kunda. Who, this time, sincerely agreed to join the empire.
Patrick: "Ed, how are we supposed to have a TPK if you go and join the empire?"
"Stupid jedi," said Sepna, who'd been watching for who knows how long, and shot Kunda repeatedly with one of the giant rifles scavenged from the first room, scoring a critical and mostly-killing him.
Ed: "Fucking Sepna, he could have done that to the ONLY REMAINING ENEMY and then we might have won, but instead he goes and kills me. What a jerk."
At any rate, the mission was a resounding failure, and the three jedi trainees awoke in prison cells (except for Kunda, who had a much nicer hotel-room like cell) -- and this time, the empire wanted to keep them imprisoned, and so had somehow cut them off from the force. Kunda was taken away for indoctrination, while Kuu and Druu Kai were cajoled into becoming dark. Druu Kai resisted to the death, but Kuu gave in when he saw that even Master Vidal [who was *supposed* to be the final combat, except that the party never got that far] had turned.
The end.
last session
After the game, the GM expressed amazement that the party had been so weak.
Jeff: "That was only a CR 9 encounter!"
Me: "The hell?"
J: "Yeah, those two dark jedi were only level 9. If you'd focused on them and ignored the turrets..."
Me: "I was *killed* by the turrets -- they took off like two thirds of my vitality."
J: "Oh, yeah..."
Still, we probably could have won with different tactics and better luck. Although making the dark jedi immune to wound damage from lightsabers, grenades, and blasters was kind of cheesy, even if it is a feat in the book.
All in all, I'm glad it's over. x.x
