So, I hear tell that these so-called 'armor quests' in EQ2 are doable at 20, and that anyone can do them, and that everyone should because they give you really good armor. Of course, the NPC that supposedly starts them doesn't give me the quest...

EQ2Map did eventually show my the NPC I needed to actually talk to -- apparently it depends on what type of armor your want, so of course a ranger getting chain would be different NPC than a fury needing leather. The first 'errand' they wanted me to do was to... kill more gnolls.

In particular, 'sabertooth elders in antonica', which I'd never seen in all my 20+ levels over multiple characters wandering all around Antonica. But again, EQ2Map let me cheat and see that if I killed the battlers and rune casters around *this* tent it would spawn tormentors and a single elder. So, this means it's effectively a kill 50 gnolls quest (I needed 4 elders, or 4 thingies off elders which could mean up to 40 elders, but that would make it a kill 500 gnolls quest and they wouldn't do that to me *twice* would they?), but he gnolls are grey and can't hurt me and die quickly.

...and then a full group of 'roleplaying' characters swoops in and steals the elder I finally get to spawn. "Hi, we're just passing through when this gnoll attacked us. What luck! It had one of the thingies I needed!" Fucking roleplayers.

So, I swear at them for a bit and head to a zone where I can at least be fighting greens. I needed 30 gnolls in Thundering Steppes for the giant chief, and 9 for the bridge guard's second task (do three tasks and you can open the gates). But the gnolls around the waterfall entrance are all green and grey, and ONE out of a group of four keeps getting lost and breaking the encounter, which (a) instantly heals all the gnolls I'm fighting, and (b) removes any loot, xp, or quest rewards from them.

So since I'm not having much luck, I decide to wander a bit farther, and see a likely group of gnolls hanging out around a terraporter. "Huh, they always give the gnolls wierd names. I wonder what an 'abductor' does?"

For once, the name was completely accurate and clearly described what the gnolls did. I spent the rest of the time I had getting out of the freaking gnoll prison. 9.9 Oh well, at least the instance had decent loot and some interesting fights and stuff.

None of the gnolls in there counted towards any of the quests, of course...
