Stupid Pirates. Grr.

Last night we had a session of Lazar's Shadake game.
No more pirates poured in through the hole immediately, so Perrel started loading Balthazaar up onto Jardin's back while Wayne flew up to notify the defenders that the fort had been breached.
When he got up there, the situation was pretty dire -- the fort's defenders were all sleeping, except for a few down below fighting hand-to-hand and one archer who hadn't been affected. Trying to wake them up had no effect, and the archer was running out of arrows. Wayne got him a few more arrows, and the rest of the grenades from down below, then kidnapped Roshan (the Cytherian daughter who'd expressed interest in travelling with them) so that they could milk her poison as the base for some 'wake up' grenades.
With the whole party cooperating, it took less than a minute to make a small batch, although they had to use up some of the deadly grenades to get enough gold wire to work with, since all the materials on hand had been used up during their fugue the night before.
Now, it was the ridiculously wide radius of explosion on the grenades (100 foot radius! Way farther than most people could throw) that made the wake-up plan feasible, since the fort was pretty large... but it meant that Wayne had to fly up into the air to get out of the blast radius -- the wake up medicine was based on *extremely painful* poison, and had been made in a hurry, so it was unlikely to be very pleasant. Up in the air, he was too visible to the bored pirates manning ballistae, and was basically shot out of the sky, although he was only hit by a *glancing* blow on his tail (Cytherials look like winged nagas, so most of his body was tail) and his fall was controlled.
Unfortuantely, the wake-up grenades didn't work. Balthazaar got hit by a stray needle, and they worked on *him*, at least, but some magic or *something* was keeping the people at the fort asleep, despite their best efforts.
So they decided to continue on to the ship, dragging Roshan along because she was still asleep and the fort didn't look like a safe place to leave her. When they saw that one of the nearby ships had only a skeleton crew *and* was on fire, and Balthazaar expressed a desire to get some gunpowder, like the pirates must surely be using to power their cannon, they left her hidded behind a curving cliff and flew and swam out to assault the ship with their remaining grenades -- they had thirteen between them, Perrel carrying one in each hand (that is, four) and Wayne carrying the rest.
The pirates did spot the party swooping up on deck to attack, but the grenades still did their work and took out most of them. The captain was a tougher nut to crack, and shot Wayne in the wing, leaving him crawling slowly across the deck, crippled, but Perrel used his grenades to finish him off. Jardin was stuck in the water the whole time -- Centaurs can't climb up the side of a ship very easily.
Once the pirates were all dead or unconscious or swimming away, Jardin was hoised up into the ship, and they went below to inspect the gunpowder. The idea was raised of using the cannon to blow up the next pirate ship over, and Balthazaar knew how to use cannon, and talked his students through loading up the whole broadside while he used the extra gunpowder to make bombs. They loaded the bombs onto the ship's last boat (the same one they'd hoisted Jardin up in), planning to make a run for it after firing, as the other ship's return fire was likely to sink them.
The plan pretty much went off correctly -- they managed to put enough holes in the other ship to slowly sink it, and got away without anyone being hit by a cannonball. When they rowed over to the last remaining pirate ship to set their bombs, though, they found it deserted -- the townsfolk had already boarded and ransacked it. So they left it unmolested, and instead rowed their little boat up the canals so that they could load the bombs (and themselves) onto the airship.
By that time, the fighting (most of which had taken place on land) was dying down. Their ship was mostly functional -- Klazko and Hodge had taken the sky mantas up to the top of the canopy to be out of harm's way, while Rudy had locked herself in the danger room with some children... the rest of the ship was like the city streets, strewn with dead humans and juruki (townsfolk) and daeg (pirates) alike.
But the town had prevailed, despite their losses -- they'd outnumbered the pirates from the start, and the grenades (and the party's direct actions) had helped neutralize the pirates' advantage of superior weaponry. There was much rejoicing, from the people who were inclined to such things...
So, they were paid four books for their services in making the weapons, and for four more of the food-machines, and then Balthazaar had them sneak off before dawn again. "It's easier this way, and we don't want to overstay our welcome. They're in for hard times, with so many dead and all those buildings burnt down. At least my food processors should keep them from actually starving."
Roshan did wake up -- the sleep effect turned out to be a short-lived disease, and Perrel estimated that 90% of the townsfolk would be awake after a day or so -- and still wanted to come with the party on their airship. Wayne, at least, was happy to have her company, especially since they'd been obviously undermanned on the trip down. Yes, that was the main reason. c.c
Of the party, the only serious injury was Wayne's wing, which Perrel splinted, but would probably have him out of the air for a couple weeks, barring some sort of magitech intervention. Balthazaar and Jardin considered clockwork wing or bone replacements, but eventually decided it was a bad idea.

The CoH changes are still eating at me. Maybe Harry Potter will make everything better? Assuming I can actually get my hands on it before Monday; retrieving packages from the apartment office is often an ordeal, and I might not be in to pick it up in person.
