We had another session of D+D with Dave DMing. I hope Jeff comes back soon. Ed is of the opinion that Jeff won't be coming back ever.

Dave isn't really doing a bad job, but he's a little sloppy and unconfident. Kind of like I am when I GM.

The party was paid for their services in fighting off the scarecrows, and all the farmers who'd lost their farms were rounded up and arrested, since 'four scarecrows, four farms, obviously they were all in it together.' 'But weren't there a total of five scarecrows?' Eh, whatever. Surely, the guilty party was among the dozen or two people arrested, which was good enough.

So they headed back to Kingsport to sell off the more expensive loot they'd gotten from the kobolds and the evil cultists. There weren't really any magic items for sale, which meant they were rich! Still, might as well look for work.

The two main jobs available were to check out the hotel (which no one had come out of alive before) or to help the demons clear the rabble out of the ruined section of the city (20 gp an ear). They argued, but eventually decided to clear the hotel.

The bottom floor of the hotel was clear, so they decided to check the basement next. Ignaceous walked boldly down the stairs, and a claw reached out and paralyzed him. The rest of the party charged down to try to help him, only to be overcome by the horrible stench and forced to retreat, while the troglodyte ghouls munched on Ignaceous and on Cora's wolf. Luckily for Ignaceous, Tydek managed to stand his ground and fight them, and Cora and Phygtyl opened up with ranged weapons once they could stop retching.

[this wasn't normal trog stench -- instead of sickening for 10 rounds it nauseated for 1 round; I think this was the result of Dave not having a monster manual and only vaguely remembering what trog stench did. He set the DC really high, too]

The ghouls were eventually dispatched, but most of the party was badly wounded, Cora's wolf was dead, and Ignaceous had only stabilized by blind luck, so they dragged his unconscious ass out of the hotel to heal up with a wand of lesser vigor they'd managed to find [expendable magic items weren't included in the 'no magic for sale' rule]. Two minutes later, they headed back inside, walking right into an ambush by archers lining the upper balcony.

Fortunately, they weren't very good archers. The party charged up the stairs, split up around the circular balcony to catch them in a pincer maneuver and force them into melee, and cut them down with only a few scratches. Then the second wave started pouring out of the back hallways, and the party decided to run away again, dragging one of the dead bodies with them so that they could maybe figure out what exactly these things were and how an entire tribe of them had set up shop in the middle of the city without anyone noticing.
