Send in the Clowns
Apr. 9th, 2005 02:01 pmWe had a session of the GURPS game that I've been *trying* to wrap up... and once again I was foiled by their insistance on turning back at the last second. Argh.
It was a short session this time too, although this time it was because we spent a lot of time going out to eat. Good steaks, tho.
Kitten, still teleporting around randomly, tried to fly up high to spot the frozen lake he'd seen once, or else figure out where the storm was, but as he kept moving around -- getting higher and higher with each teleport, until he was a bit higher than he'd really intended -- he saw the landscape below start to change drastically, getting more and more civilized and built up, until all the wilderness was replaced with farmland and cities.
Also, strange clouds appeared in the sky, long and thin and straight, except that they seemed to keep turning to head towards him each time he teleported. Finally, when the random teleport spell wore off, he felt a sudden warning of danger as the clouds continued to close in, and cast a wind spell to try to blow it off course.
The spell went wild, unfortunately, and affected only the device generating the cloud and not the man riding on it, who went flying off past Kitten and cast his own flight spell. There was a quick magical duel, but Kitten's inability to get any spell off without it going badly wild meant he lost the duel, and was rendered unconscious from his wounds.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Don and John saw a large square gate open up in the middle of the frozen lake, and an army start to come through. On the far side of the gate, the army was riding large battle-monsters and carring various magical and medieval equipment, including things like flying carpets. But as they came through, all their equipment was changed into steampunk-like technology, turning the flying carpets into steam-powered riding brooms, and the animals into massive tanks bristling with turrets. This confused the soldiers immensely, as they had no idea how to use the new equipment, but they seemed determined to secure the area regardless.
Don and John waited for an hour, hoping that Kitten would show up to fix everything for them, but in vain. Eventually, they decided that they had to move, as the soldiers were starting patrols that would find them if they stayed in the city area. So they headed for the center, stopping at their vehicle on the way to pick up enough healing to cure John's wounds.
Soon, following the path took them to the misty area -- that is, the mist that they couldn't see through. Visibility was very bad -- 2 meters -- and eventually they came to a dropoff that extended down out of sight. John decided to wander off the path to find a stick or something to drop to test how high the cliff was, but instantly got lost, even though he only just moved out of sight of Don.
His attempt at a spiralling search patten had him wandering all over the place at random, until he suddenly realized that somehow he was at the *bottom* of the cliff -- and it was the same cliff, since he could hear Don nearby (although the mist made it impossible to judge direction). After many attempts, they managed to throw a rope to each other and meet up, and then Don built a compass to help them navigate. It was still confusing, but with the compass' help they managed to make progress...
...and then they ran into a wall of absolute zero cold, like they'd encountered earlier, although this one seemed free-standing. Not wanting to lose everything they owned and/or continue on naked, they turned around and went back.
And ran into a patrol of soldiers, ransacking their vehicle! John snuck up, kicked in his speed, and beheaded the one outside, while Don fired lasers at the two inside as they came to the doorway -- they couldn't see him through the mist to return fire! The soldiers locked themselves inside, but Don smoked them out by starting an oil fire, and John finished them off as they ran outside, coughing, although one managed to shoot him in the gut with his gigantic steam-powered crossbow. It was a pretty bad wound, but they were right at their vehicle with 90 or so healing potions left.
Still, the fight had definately caused a lot of light and noise, so it was likely that more company would be showing up soon.
