Tonight we had a session of David's interim D+D game, which was another session of murder mysteriousness. It was hard to keep interest in the game, and we kept getting distracted.

While Tydek, Phygtyl, and Cora were still looting the kobolds, the bronze door which the kobolds had been guarding flung open, and out lurched a horrifying undead! Fortunately, the undead was much, much weaker than the kobolds had been... but it still managed to beat down Tydek and Cora, who'd started out almost dead from the kobold fight. Phygtyl finished it off, dragged the party back out of the dungeon, then ran to get help while leaving the wolf and the dog on guard. He got back to find that they'd had to fight off more kobolds. Oops! Luckily, the wolf had *successfully* fought off the kobolds...

So the party retreated to town to recover. With the aid of Three Rivers' healer (note: not a cleric, as all the good gods in the world were dead), this only took two days. Which meant they were at least up in time for the funeral, which passed without incident.

Afterwards, (and after identifying and divvying up the kobold loot) they decided to try tracking down the murderer again. The cemetary tunnels were obviously a red herring. There was a village witch, but she hadn't been able to talk to the crows either, and was totally useless. So, stumped, they bummed around town hoping that the answer would magically fall into their lap.

And it did, in the form of another early-morning murder. They rushed out of the house and to the scene of the crime, in time to see the murder of crows swarming off in a certain direction. Following them, they saw several of the crows land on a scarecrow. They would have thought nothing of it if the scarecrow hadn't gotten up and attacked them!

Now, they'd rushed out of bed, and had minimal weapons and no armor on hand... but Cora hadn't cast any spells for a few days, and had a briar web ready to trap the thing. Phygtyl tried running back to get the rest of their equipment, but the creature broke free almost immediately, and they were forced to face it as is.

It was badly wounded by the time it made it out of the web, at least, and they were able to finish it off in short order. Searching it for clues revealed a silver scythe embedded in its chest... and then Tydek burned the rest, since it was obviously evil.

The farm was inhabited, so they decided to go talk to the farmer about his murderous scarecrow. The farmer feigned ignorance, and insisted he knew nothing about the murder of the two council members or the banker.

Now, the banker had *just* been murdered, and the party had run from the crime scene to the farm in hot pursuit -- there was no way that the farmer could have gotten the rumor ahead of them without being guilty. He tried to feign innocence anyway, but they were having nothing of it and dragged him back before the magistrate for questioning.

The magistrate listened to their testimony and agreed that there was enough evidence to question the man. The party wasn't sure that the family was uninvolved, however, and headed back to search the house. They didn't find anything damning, but they did find a promisary note informing the family that they were going to lose their farm to the recently deceased banker... a motive!

With that evidence in hand, they returned to the jail, only to find that the farmer had confessed to everything and claimed responsibility -- that he'd found the silver scythe and accidentally discovered how to use it. The party wasn't sure he was telling the truth... and when a phalanx of scarecrows attacked the jail in an attempt to free him, they were sure that he was lying!

Fighting *four* scarecrows was difficult, but with their armor on and all the party was a bit better equipped to handle this group, and besides, the city guard helped out. The scarecrows were downed, and when they showed signs of getting up again, Phygtyl and the others reached in and removed their animating charms. With the scarecrows gone, the crows (who'd been harassing the townsfolk during the battle) dispersed, and the danger appeared to be past, for the moment...
