I started a fire/ice blaster, which is a blast to play compared to the Angry Hunter or Ferrific. I made her female, because insane fire mages HAVE to be female (thank you Slayers), and named her Cinnamon.

Of course, the premise behind picking this combination turned out to be ungrounded in reality -- the hero planner app had slightly inaccurate descriptions of the first ice secondary and fire primary power that made them seem ridiculously overpowering. Nevertheless, Chillblain is *still* a really good hold/DOT even if it isn't really area of effect, and flares doesn't suck, although it's not as good as fireblast once you have other powers.

In fact, Chillblain/Flares/Fireblast is a 3-power cycle that I can use continuously until I run out of endurance, which does a lot of damage since each of them has a DOT component and the DOTs seem to stack with themselves as well as with each other.

At 6th, I took Hover, which let me jump up out of melee and blow the enemies up, one at a time or all at once (with fireball). At 10th, I took 'Chilling Embrace', which was somewhat disappointing because its range is really low -- low enough that initially I thought it was only good in melee, and a blaster doesn't want to be in melee. It turns out it isn't *quite* melee range -- there's a height that I can hover at that's out of melee but close enough to the ground to embrace my foes -- but it's close enough that I usually don't bother trying to use it together with Hover.

Instead, I save it for ranged or flying enemies (like the Lost and Hellions lieutenants), or for when I'm grouped with a tank. Er, a tank who has taunt. And uses it. I can stand right next to a taunting tank, shooting off fireballs and emanating the unresistable megaslow, and not draw any aggro. And it makes a huge difference to the tank, too, letting them easily keep up with the damage coming in that would otherwise be dangerous.

So, even though it didn't have the range I'd hoped for, it doesn't suck. There's another similar PBAoE called Ice Patch that looks like it might combo well with it -- slow down their movement, then knock them off their feet, and watch them get up in slooooow mooootion. }:P

At 12th I took fire breath, but I haven't gotten a chance to really use it. I don't have Aim (I'm going for Build Up instead) but I might still be able to alpha-strike white minions with fire breath and fireball.

At any rate, having a variety of powers to use is a lot more fun than the scrapper's 'run in and hit him until he falls over, then start hitting the next guy until he falls over too'. Also: Grouping is more fun than solo, even with a bad group. Sometimes, *especially* with a bad group, if it's bad enough to get you in situations where you need to do challenging things (like the remaining two party members taking on a group of reds to get to the others' bodies) without being so bad that people just quit. I suppose it would be less fun if I was one of the corpses. }:P

But I'm good at running away, and have been in every MMORPG I've played. I'll often be out the door resting in another zone before the rest of the group even realizes that they're in trouble! };)

On a less-boring-especially-to-people-who-don't-play-City-of-Heroes note,
Bad idea: Start a character at 2am, when your bedtime is 1am.
Worse idea: Use the random character generator to pick a costume because you don't feel like making the effort of coming up with an idea.
Worst idea: Stop at the first visually striking result, and accept it without changing the color scheme.

I'm now the proud owner of a brand new miniature 'huge' character decked out in bright green and purple leopard spots.
