Computer Things

terryclothFirst, about the hard drive cable... things people are saying suggest that it might be that I just didn't push it in hard enough. I mean, I pushed pretty hard, but I was certainly holding back, because I don't like breaking expensive new equipment. If that's not it, then I can try a new (or maybe an old) cable. I was thinking about it as if the cable was part of the motherboard, but of course it's not.
Now all I have to do is make myself try either of those remedies... not to mention hooking up the printer, rewiring the phone lines, copying over preferences and bookmarks and applications, and everything else that would have the new computer fully be installed. Right now I'm still in the 'want to play it all the time' phase of city of heroes, though, so all that's on hold.
I keep getting invited to random groups in CoH -- they have a feature that gives you a list of everyone in the world of the same level as you, it seems -- and for the most part it's been fun. I got to play with a competent controller, in a small group where I had to do most of the damage myself... and then with a group of experienced players who were all playing blasters and defenders, who kept AoEing everything, leaving only the boss for me to chase around and try to hit. This also made me their designated tank, to rush into the group of red circle of thorns guys to draw aggro. That was the second try, which worked; the first method was to use the standard 'blast randomly and with no coordination, then everyone runs around screaming, and eventually all the enemies will be dead', which worked a lot better on Hellions.
Also, I finally got a third attack, 'Follow up', which despite its name really has to be used first, because it boosts your attack power. I was amazed at how effective it was, but from messageboard postings it eventually gets a lot less useful, once you have more attacks that are powerful in their own right. Also, I'm supposed to be taking *all* the SR defensive powers and fully slotting them, which seems like a daunting task if I also want a travel power, health and stamina regen, and a good array of attack powers... then at 38 or whatever I'm supposed to throw all of that away and respec to 'perma elude'. Yeah, like I'll ever take a MMORPG character to 38. }:P And like I'd ever willingly switch to a 'recast all my buffs every 90 seconds' model from the current 'toggle everything on and forget about it' model. I paid my rebuff-dance dues in Asheron's Call, buddy.
