Fun? With D-travel.
Jan. 16th, 2005 12:34 amLast night we had a session of the GURPS Neverwhere game at Lazar's place. It was the end of a milestone at work, so to celebrate, we'd gone out to Desert Fire for Mohitos -- not that I actually had any alcohol. Instead, I spent two hours chatting with people and munching on chips and salsa... so by the time I realized I was half an hour late setting off, I was also completely full.
I got to Lazar's place around 7ish, which isn't *that* late, and found that they all wanted me to take them to Torrerros, since it was my turn to buy dinner... and I was like "No way! I can't eat anything, and I'm not going to sit there at a restaurant watching you all eat." The wafer thin mint joke was pulled out for the second time that night, and I ended up getting them take out from Torrerros, which meant that at least I could look over game stuff on my laptop while they ate.
Kitten tracked down his cat by looking for it in its usual haunts, then using a Seeker spell to track its exact location. With it recovered, he rejoined the others, and after paying off the mage, they got themselves dimension-ported back to Athens East.
It wasn't exactly as they'd left it -- they'd been out in the middle of nowhere when they'd ported to the bazaar, and now there was a small town off in the direction where they guessed their car was parked. Kitten's cat leaped out of his arms to go explore the field, while the rest of the party headed to explore the town.
The town was really small, and really full of cats, who all greeted Kitten and asked where he'd been, and would he call animals for them to hunt? Kitten wasn't familiar with dimension travel, so he was a little confused by that, but who was he to refuse the request of a housecat? So he spent ten minutes calling a swarm of tiny lizards, while John and Don searched for their car.
The tracks ended right in the middle of town, and on further inspection it looked like it'd been dragged off towards a large garage-like building. The only building where they got a response to knocking on the door just had a grumpy, suspicious character who told them they'd never seen a car, though, and that maybe they should start looking for somewhere safe to sleep, since it wasn't a good idea to be out at night, because of all the ferals.
So, since these people had obviously stolen the car, John borrowed Don's backup wrench and started breaking down a bricked-up window in the back of the garage. This made a lot of noise, though, and as he finally broke through, disloding a single brick, the barrel of a rifle poked back out at him, and the man inside (a different guy) warned him to stop poking into their business, yada yada.
Yes, it's really stupid to poke a rifle barrel out of a small hole at someone in melee range. Yes, John was able to knock the rifle out of the guy's hands and pull it through the hole. As the disarmed defender ran downstairs, John peered through the gap and saw that, yes, his car was inside the garage. Or, well, most of it was. Apparently, it'd been stripped.
They were able to gain entrance to the garage, finally, by having Don squeeze through the cat-door in the front and unlock it from the inside. John kept watch on the stairs (in case the people who lived there mounted a counterattack) while Don rebuilt the car, better than before... well, if by 'better' you mean 'runs on waste oil, and shoots flames out the exhaust'.
Kitten had to go find his cat again (it was treed by a wolf, so he set a lightning elemental on the wolf to distract it, and swooped in to the rescue with hawk flight), and then they spent an hour or so driving back to the town with the rich guy who'd had an auction, and that they'd talked with on the way to the bazaar.
The car ran out of oil at that point, and they were all covered in soot and grime from the exhaust fumes washing over them. John wanted to stay the night there, but it was only about noon, so he was convinced that they'd have time to get back to Athens before dark. Don re-modified the car to run on actual fuel again (and to have its exhaust fumes not engulf the passenger compartment), and they headed back to Ohio.
They got to Athens about 6ish -- still a few hours before sunset. Unfortunately, the town looked deserted. Not only were (almost) all the buildings still smashed by lightning strikes, but all the people were missing as well. Since the gates were blocked by feral-traps, and Kitten could easily fly, he was sent in to investigate.
The most obvious building still standing was the church where Charlie had lived, so Kitten tried to head there... but a building almost fell on him, and his flight spell sputtered and died, and he decided that this town really hated him. He did notice that most of the destroyed buildings had boarded over stairways leading into the basement -- someone had repaired them, after the destruction! One of them looked like it was still a door, so he picked the lock (with magic) and went inside.
His danger sense jangled as a Noble found him, and accused him of tresspassing. He told the noble he was there looking for survivors for Don and John, and the noble recognized those names, although he might not have believed the story... still, Don (and his agents) had a right to be there, so he left Kitten go. "Don knows that we have to come back tonight for the ceremony... tell Don that we'll bring any survivors back with us." He didn't mention where the ceremony was, assuming that Don would know. And Kitten didn't know to ask.
So, rejoining the group, they decided to try to find shelter somewhere in Athens, since it was getting late. Kitten apported them over the barrier (although he couldn't do the car), and they headed for the church (argh!), which of course led to another building trying to fall on them (and succeeding on falling on Don, although he wasn't seriously hurt) and a car somehow having a brick fall on its accelerator, sending it carreening towards them. John and Don saw it in time and just leapt to the sides, but Kitten got fancy and used magic, and almost got hit when his magic didn't work quite as well as he'd expected.
At that point, Don noticed that they were right next to the weapons shop (whose owner had been frozen to death, which meant the shop itself had returned Between, since it hadn't ever been associated with any world in particular) -- another intact building. Why not just rest there? The others couldn't see it, but followed him into the vacant lot...
...but then he started messing around with the door, to play with their heads, and ended up sending himself between. And pulling John between. So Kitten sat 'alone' in the 'empty lot', not wanting to leave (since the door was closed now).

After the game I got home, to find that my DVR had failed to record Battlestar Galactica -- it'd gotten the first twenty minutes, then stopped. When I came home and turned it on, the screen was black, until I changed the channel... maybe I have to leave it turned on for it to record things reliably? ARGH.
33;water'll be replayed at least four more times, so I haven't actually missed anything important yet, but if it does this for something like Lost I'll be really annoyed. If it keeps doing this, and I can't figure out how to make it stop, I think I'll have to get rid of it, and just go back to using a timer on a VCR. Although my succeess rate with that method isn't very good either.
