I'm really glad that Prince of Persia 2: Warrior Within decided to make the second boss the same as the first intensely frustrating boss, only without giving you a second weapon to wield, making the battle impossible. That meant that I could get fed up with the game and quit, and play Scaler instead.

Scaler is actually fun. I thought that Pop2 might not be THAT bad -- that there were some redeeming characteristics, and maybe I'd eventually get into it... but three minutes playing a game that was actually fun, and it was like the fog lifted and I could see how blinded I'd been by memories of the original Prince. Well, not the *original*, but the original 3d PS2 one, etc.

Scaler is just a silly platformer, but the controls are solid, the combat is stylized, and the difficulty ramps up slowly instead of suddenly throwing unbeatable bosses at you to punish you for making it past the fun sections. It has bosses, but they're ordinary platformer puzzle-bosses, not rejects from Dead or Alive inexplicably transplanted to a different genre.

The only complaint I have with the game is that it's too short. The story makes no sense, but that's okay -- any excuse for a kid to get transformed into a cute little lizard is good with me.

But it was short, and now I'm finished with it, and might have to go back to Warrior Within. Or else I could play EVERY OTHER GAME I OWN before touching that horrible piece of crap again. One or the other.
