The Shivering
Dec. 21st, 2004 11:58 amI caught a cold from my family, over the weekend. It's not a bad one, mostly, but last night I must have had a fever or something, because I just couldn't get warm. The windows were closed, and the heaters were on, but the air still felt chill -- and when I took off my clothes to climb into bed, I started shivering uncontrollably, teeth chattering and everything.
In bed, I tried to curl into a fetal position, but that wasn't really practical -- I ended up twisted in something similar, with my arms and neck twinging from the contortions, trying to carefully husband all the heat I could... but my feet were still cold as ice, no matter what I did to try to warm them up.
Worse, about two hours in I started having to go to the bathroom really bad, but the thought of getting out of bed and immersing myself in the cold air again... [shudder] Eventually I had no choice, though, and it wasn't that bad, because of the massively bright lights in the bathroom, which did a better job of warming me than the covers, somehow. While I was up I turned the heat *all* the way up, and remade the bed (which had been disastered by tossing and turning), and took some aleve, and eventually I managed to lie down in a normal position without feeling like I was going to freeze to death, and got some sleep.
I'm still kind of cold today, but it's not nearly as bad -- which doesn't mean I'm over the worst, unfortunately, since my colds always go away temporarily during working hours. To taunt me. Not that I'd want to take today off anyway -- I need to finish stuff up (or, more accurately, deal with not being able to finish stuff up) before leaving on vacation for a couple weeks.
