Well, the IRC Albedo game actually went off tonight, although at least two of the expected players were missing, which meant it was just me and the three residents of Skykin Grove, which is actually not all THAT far away -- up in Everett, I understand. So why are we playing online? Well, I guess the commute up to Everett on weekdays during rush hour would suck even more than the commute down to Renton that I do on Fridays... that and they're hoping the two remote players will actually show up sometime.

Net, take down a new journal entry for Taro Khashi. Mark it Mission 3, Day 1, Hour 1.

Well, I'm finally out of the hospital, and my new commander seems determined to put me back in it as soon as possible. I guess that's his job. Name's Sterryk, a wolf. Outranks me. Rapid Response service. That's really all I was able to get on him, in advance. Apparently he's running some sort of special forces operation... I wasn't assigned a squad for this mission, we'll be working on our own, in small groups.

I met the third member of the team on the shuttle to Ekosiak station -- a rabbit. A fucking rabbit. Tabitha. From the fucking ILR. The way she told it, she 'escaped' from her resource colony and joined the EDF because she hated the ILR soooo much. Eh, I suppose I should give her a chance, I'm sure they checked out her story, and god knows anyone sane would flee the ILR.

I think she was building a bomb to mess with my head. I *hope* that's why she was building a bomb.

We were almost to the station when Sterryk called us up to the cockpit. Well, he called Tabitha up, and she asked me along, and I figured I should stick with the group. Just as I stood up, of course the pilot told everyone to strap in for the deceleration burn -- I took the last seat available up front. They had a lot of empty seats up there.

Apparently, I had the gunner's chair. It wasn't labeled or anything, and I'd probably never have known if we hadn't been jumped by pirates. Fucking pirates! And there I was sitting in the gunner's seat without a clue as to how to even turn the thing on! Sterryk had just assumed I knew what I was doing -- typical RR attitude. "You should learn your way around a ship," he said afterwards.

Yeah, I'm really feeling good about this assignment. I suppose beggars can't be choosers, after the last one.

Anyway, once I was assigned to *sensors*, which at least had a comprehensible readout, we managed to fight off the pirates, but not after taking a bad hit, that messed up the whole rear of the ship. I gave some first aid to the wounded while the rest of the unit they were in stood there like sheep. Tabitha ran all over trying to fix things, but most of them were beyond fixing. She *is* pretty handy with a toolkit, I have to give her that, and she stayed calm during the crisis.

Sterryk... I don't know. He was ordering everyone around, telling the pilots how to do their job, total micromanagement. Why was he even in the cockpit?

Better question: Where was the actual flight crew?

Anyway, we should be docking with the station shortly. Hopefully we won't have to fight any more battles until we've got real ground under our feet. Net, end the entry.
