I Hate Phones
Oct. 25th, 2004 12:50 pmLast night, after the game, I was driving home through gray drizzle, trying to decide on the best way to get down to Legend's, since he was *probably* having people over... I'd already missed the turnoff that would have let me jog over to 405 from Kirkland, but I could get on 520 and then...
At some point, I remembered that I had his number, and considered that maaaaybe I should stop at home (which was on the way) and call him up to ask if I could stop by. And even though that was completely the obvious thing to do, it was still a toss-up as to whether I'd do it, because I really, really hate calling people on the telephone.
In a way, I hate any means of contacting other people. I'm slowly getting used to e-mail (having used it for, what, the past 12 years), but it *never* bugged me as much as the phone, because it's asynchronous -- you don't expect an immediate response, and it doesn't interrupt them in the middle of whatever they're doing. IM is also better than a phone, since you can at least see that they're willing to receive a message, but I still hardly ever use it because I feel weird 'calling someone up'.
Given that I'm already getting old, I have to wonder if I'll ever be able to just call someone out of the blue to ask if they want to do something without already being 90% sure of the answer.
