Surprise Visit!
Sep. 23rd, 2004 10:31 amWell, not really. I was surprised that they were in yesterday, is all.
I got home from work and had a message on my answering machine. With a weary sigh, I hit the button to play the messages, finger hovering over the 'detele' button, since 10 times out of 10 (rounded off) it's a telemarketer or someone doing a survey or a wrong number.
This time it was my mom saying that she was in town and over at my sister's house, and did I want to come over? I'd been expecting her to get in today, but it's not like I had anything *planned* for last night, so I called back and talked with my sister about it, and decided I'd check the traffic online and come over if it wasn't too awful.
Of course, the traffic was awful, but I had an idea for a route that I thought would avoid most of the traffic, so I headed out down the lake hills connector to Richards Road, then got on I-90 West before Factoria, crossed the lake, got off on Ranier before it hit the big snarl at the I-5 interchange, then slunk through city side streets until I finally arrived at a street I recognized (Madison) and took that street down to the ferries, then skulked along the waterfront up to the Magnolia Bridge, and from there it was easy. It took about 40 minutes, which isn't bad, and it *did* avoid almost all traffic.
So, we talked some... my sister's thinking of going into software, on the theory that if I can do it, anyone can do it, but isn't sure there's a market or a future in that industry. She asked for other suggestions for work, but what it really comes down to is that she has a new baby and can't really be out of the house anyway, so it's up to Alex to find a new job. My mother kept recommending that Anna go into med tech, like she is, even though she hates her job and always complains about it. Mom also seemed to think that you could get a job in 'bio-med' without any training in biology or medicine, which seemed to fishy to me and my sister both, but what do we know? Not 'what the hell is 'bio-med'?', that's for sure.
Eventually, Alex was sent out to get a movie, and we watched 'Underworld'. It was really disappointing; why bother having the war be between werewolves and vampires if both sides have special bullets deadly against the other, and just end up shooting back and forth in human form all the time? The vampires in particular never seemed to use any of their powers unless it didn't matter.
Mom fell asleep before the movie was over, of course. She always does that. This time, she blamed jet-lag, but she always did it back in Toledo, too. }:P
I'm not sure if I'm going to go over there tonight... I might. I'll definately be down there Saturday for Stevie's big birthday party, and I'll definately NOT be there on Friday, since I'm going to go down to Conifur for the day, I think. Assuming I don't get killed by weekday I-5 traffic.
