Jesus hates me
May. 4th, 2004 11:40 amObviously, he's up there controlling the weather and making it cold on the first day I decide to leave my coat at home. Or it might be Thor, I suppose. Or those fiendish weathermen.
It was sort of cold when I decided to leave my coat behind, but it's been sort of cold in the mornings for a while now, with it heating up progressively during the day until I was hot and regretted bringing my coat.
Anyway, while walking along one of my standard morning routes -- the one that goes past two churches and a high school -- I started thinking about spirituality and religion. Gilead's remark that 'there was only one section of the bible important enough that god actually wrote it himself' combined with some christian writings on how catholics were evil because they encouraged the worship of idols, and on how good deeds were pointless and only praying to jesus would save you, and I decided that worshipping Jesus was against the ten commandments.
Specifically, the second. Maybe there's something in the bible that makes this clear case of idolatry not 'count', but the bible is just this book people wrote after being 'inspired' -- only the ten commandments are god's words in his own words. It's like holding up an act of congress against the constitution -- Christianity is untencommandmentual.
No wonder the catholics got rid of the second commandment.
But it's worse than that -- look at what people like Chick are telling you! They're saying that obeying god's laws -- or at least, *trying* to obey god's laws -- isn't important. The only thing that's important is that you pay homage to this other spiritual entity Jesus here, and he'll sidestep the whole process and get you into heaven, no questions asked.
They're saying that god doesn't love you -- god hates you, because you're sinful. Got hates you so much he'll condemn you to an eternity of torture, even if you try to be good. OUR guy loves you, though, so worship him instead. It's like the world's biggest negative ad campaign.
Not that I really believe in any of this... if anything -- that is, if anything persists after death -- then I believe that the world is a filter. Or a culture. And so, if you act according to what your heart tells you is right, you'll be sorted accurately. And what more could you ask?
