Tonight was Lazar's game... someone I don't know named Qba was supposed to be joining us, but he didn't show. This makes the third or fourth week in a row that someone was supposed to come and didn't.
foxcutter come back, we need you! Hee hee.
Well, okay, we've done fine with four people for a long time now, but it's a pretty small group like this.
Anyway, tonight Lazar's keyboard broke, delaying the start of the game. He decided to have us fight a random encounter, since we'd flown all over the place last time without running into anything, but he didn't have anything prepared, so... he brought out one of his old magic decks... and played it against us. Ugh.
The game started with the party heading for Zenebatos to return to Earth to re-invade the World Trade Center (mk 2) and rescue/steal Aquilas. Nazir flew his now-winged van, while Martin, Vorshath the golem, and Chashimi the illusionist rode in the back. NKN flew her own ornithopter alongside.
Suddenly, as the two craft passed near a Manis dirigible and a Murrikai soul-burner (who, in hindsight, were probably about to attack each other, the Manis and the Murrikai being traditional enemies), a giant squid appeared. Nazir was unable to avoid grazing it as he swerved out of the way, and it responded by covering the van in blue ink, blacking out all the windows, although the instruments (including the infrared cameras) were unaffected.
Martin popped his head out the skylight/turren to see what was going on just in time to see a massive wall appear right in front of them. He leaped out of the van and dodged over the front of the wall... but Nazir had no chance, and the van was smashed almost flat, and its disintegrating wreckage fell to the ground a thousand feet below, presumably with everyone aboard already dead.
Martin started firing at the squid with his caster, but the shells he was using were experimental, and the first few he shot did nothing useful. He tried to hide from it behind the wall, but the wall vanished as suddenly as it had appeared, and the squid ripped off his legs. Since the wings holding him up were attached to his back, this didn't really impair him immediately, as he flew into an adrenaline-fueled rage and fire furiously at the squid, finally withering and killing it with an age-inducing beam. It was immediately replaced by a giant, blue-scaled dragon-like thing... with no wings... hovering 1000 feet in the air.
Meanwhile, NKN kept her distance and tried to figure out what was going on, and the Murrikai ship went berzerk and started firing badly-aimed cannon shots at everyone. A fiery phoenix arose from the wreck of Nazir's van, and healed Martin -- apparently, Chashimi at least had survived the crash.
As Martin stunned the blue-scaled wurm (which started to fall just before being shot to pieces by Murrikai cannon fire), a 'rotothopter' appeared to continue to menace him, while a cannon appeared and started firing wasps at NKN. This was the last straw, and she returned fire with her spinal-mounted vulcan cannon with a cornucopia of depleted uranium rounds, utterly annihilating it.
Martin's loaded caster shells were useless against machines, so he took out the massively overpowered silenced pistol he'd spent all the money from his last job on, and started firing armor-piercing incendiary rounds at it... only to have his weapon crumble in his hands. With a cry of agony at the loss, he reloaded his caster with anti-magic and anti-metal crystals, while the rotothopter loomed over him, magic crackling around it anew as a spell made it larger and more menacing.
At this point, NKN spotted what had to be the mage behind all the chaos, and flipped her ornithopter around to train her disgusting cannon on him. He managed to survive the first volley... and a massive airship, hundreds of feet long, appeared next to Martin, pointed vaguely in her direction, bristling with glowing mana cannon. It was the flagship predator, artifact, 5T: destroy target creature with flying.
Martin finally took out the rotothopter, but failed to dispel the Predator. The rust beams started to work on it, and inexplicably, out of nowhere, a red dragon and a sphinx rushed into battle... on the side of the party, pouncing the massive airship. It managed to get off a single shot, destroying the Murrikai, before falling silent under the creatures' assault. Not because it was damaged, but because NKN's cannon had finally stripped away all the planeswalker's defenses and forced him to flee.
The Manis airship idiotically attacked the red dragon, and were toasted. Then the dragon and sphinx left, leaving the party alone amidst the wreckage of four flying vessels and, surprisingly, the corpses of thousands of forest creatures which, unknown to NKN and Martin, had all started to attack each other in some sort of berzerk rage.
Nazir, Vorshath, and Chashimi were all alive and unhurt, somehow. Chashimi informed Martin that he'd only been healed in an illusionary sense, and not to get near anything anti-magic until he'd healed naturally. To replace the weasel's missing legs, he gave him a 'creation shell' of an 8-tailed kitsune. Martin, of course, was not interested in 'replacements' which would go away as soon as he met a Grrlock (relatively common human looking people who radiated anti-magic) and resolved to either find a healer to regenerate his legs, or buy cybernetic replacements back on Earth.
We ended as Chashimi 'repaired' the van (temporarily, with solid illusion) and the party prepared to head for Amaranth and eventually to Skypass, so that NKN and Nazir could hold a rave for a mutual friend of theirs that Martin had never heard of, supposedly a matter of life and death.
After that it'll just be a matter of fixing the van and Martin for real, getting Martin's briefcase of holding fixed so that (hopefully) the 75 rubies (~$750,000) their employer had given them to pay for Chashimi and Nathaniel's services could be retrieved, and then of course going to the World Trade Center (mk 2) and rescuing/stealing Aquilas. Sigh.
