Magic Rambling
Mar. 30th, 2004 12:00 pmThe weather is nasty again. Ahwell, it'll get good sooner or later.
After getting annoyed with various MUCKs, I had another frenzied deckbuilding session last night, updating my red/green beast deck to type II (I hope; I'm not sure how much has changed in the core set) and the 'Evish Rage' pregenerated deck to usefulness.
The elf deck ended up being really fricking nasty, for a deck of mine at least -- consistent turn 5 kills against goldfish. But there's hardly any thought behind it... it's just a bunch of elves, about half of whom do something to all elves or do something based on how many elves you have. And it's effective. I hate the Onslaught block.
I haven't tested it against my other decks yet, though, so it might be weaker in practice. I hope it really sucks in practice, because I don't like mindless tribal decks. The beast deck at least has some thought behind it.
The beast deck lost some central cards -- Beast Attack and Overrun, for two -- but I put in some of the cheaper beasts with Provoke from Scourge and Legions, and some of the better equipment (the unblockable cloak and the double-strike wand) and it got... well, it got faster (6 turns down from 7). I can't say if it's better yet because I haven't had the chance to test the decks against each other yet, let alone against other people.
The process of deckbuilding hilighted why I'm leery of Magic Online (as opposed to online Magic, ala Apprentice). I used about ten square feet of coffee table and couch for shuffling cards around, comparing and grouping and sorting and collecting... I don't have that big a monitor.
On the other hand, getting to actually play more might be worth the hassle. ARGH, I wish I knew what was wrong with XP and/or my laptop that doesn't let me use Apprentice.
