Today we had another session of Tom's anime game. We dug up a grave, fought more random demons, met up with an old friend, then discovered that our entire quest was pointless.
The villagers who survived Zombie Night asked the party to please leave as soon as possible, before another demon attack killed the *other* half of the village. Perhaps they also objected to the party digging up their graveyard and exhuming Leto's corpse to speak with it, although the party tried to distract them using the pretense of burying the other villagers.
Leto's corpse (note: actual name is Weto, but to avoid confusion I'm not changing it) had nothing interesting to say, so the party took it with them, planning to ask Ariana's father to ressurect it if no other heir could be found. They stowed it next to the evil cursed necromantic orb. There were two layers of cloth between the body and the orb, so they figured it'd be safe enough.
The theater troupe insisted on coming along with them, and provided entertainment and partying during the long night watches as the party slowly made its way towards the border. Despero, being immune to poison, got in a drinking contest with the troupe's strongman... who was also immune to poison. It eventually turned into a 'who can resist going behind a bush to pee the longest' contest, as neither was physically capable of getting drunk.
There *was* a demon attack, though. An old man walking past the party suddenly exploded with a barrage of poisoned bandages, wrapping up Oshi, then sprayed the party with needles. Oshi and Felesse were hurt, but neither was killed, and between Natsuki, Zatsuichi, and Despero the creature was quickly dispatched, exploding into blue goo that sank into the ground, leaving nothing behind but the poisonous bandages and the old man's skin.
Before it died, the demon called Despero by a strange name, expressing surprise that he was fighting on the side of the humans.
In the next town, the party ditched the theater troupe and camped well away from any innocent people, not wanting to put them in danger. They continued on until they neared the border, and stopped for the night among a group of abandoned houses.
Natsuki went inside to search for ghosts and/or treasure, and found instead a young woman and her daughter. "Are you ghosts?" "No... are you a ghost?" "Nope, I'm a demon!" At that point Zatsuichi and Ariana arrived and shooed the catgirl away from the terrified commoners.
They decided to stay the night in the buildings, out of the rain, and dragged the wagon with the evil orb inside with them, not wanting to leave it unattended (again). While they were still talking about arrangements, another party arrived -- a merchant and his wife, a guard, and an old man, who offered to share sake with the party.
Natsuki took him up on his offer, but as he approached her, she noticed that one of his eyes was glowing green -- just like the demon they'd killed on the road! So she slashed at his face just as he swung at her with his sake jug, and then combat was joined!
The 'old man' was killed, splashing into blue liquid again, but this time he had other easy victims in reach, and the goo, instead of soaking into the ground, leapt into the merchant's body, who fell twitching to the ground. Despero grappled him, while Zatsuichi ran to get the orb. The creature jumped to the merchant's wife, only to get grappled again, and this time touched by the orb, although he resisted its pull. So he fled beneath the house, soaking through the floorboards.
The woman and her child ran out the back door, and kept running. This was wise. The guard dithered back and forth ouside the house, which was less wise. Ariana and Natsuki checked the now vacant bodies for signs of life, but both seemed to be dead. This pissed Ariana off immensely.
While Zatsuichi used his blindsight to track the creature as it moved around under the house (Oshi called his armor and tried to break through the floor, but couldn't manage it) and Natsuki circled around to try to find a way to crawl underneath (covering her mouth with her free hand, so as not to become its next victim), the creature popped back up into the merchant's body and made a run for it, out the door.
It didn't get far (and got touched by the orb again, but was unaffected again), but it managed to escape back under the house and possess the guard. As Zatsuichi and Despero ran to grab it again, it laughed. "You humans thing you're all so special and unique, but inside you're all the same, blood and --"
He never got to finish, as Natsuki leapt off the roof and put her admantium shortsword through his glowing green eye, killing him instantly, for real this time.
Unfortuantely, he had no treasure, and neither did the merchants.
The party evaded the border patrol by having Oshi's armor fly again and ferry the wagon across the canyon that marked the border between Elb and Conan, and soon reached the village where they hoped Leto's sister was to be found. The villagers pointed them to Goku's home, although they'd never heard of anyone named Leto.
The party didn't want to scary the family, but didn't want to take any chances either, so they had Despero sneak around behind the building while Felesse and Ariana approached openly, and the others hid in the bushes. Despero heard a commotion inside, and looking through a window saw a man (presumably Goku) help up against he wall by a demonic creature with one eye and swords for arms, while their old friend the shadow-mage stood by watching. He yelled out a warning, and the party ran to attack, hoping to save this last heir before it was too late. The shout also alerted the enemies, of course.
Natsuki spotted a girl of about the right age in a backroom, though a window, and called her over, then picked her up and ran off with her into the woods, stashing her in a tree. She had to keep the heir safe! The rest of the party fought the bad guys.
Oshi and Zatsuichi attacked the shadow-mage, who summoned a dragon and fled. The dragon didn't last long, but it lasted long enough for him to escape. Felesse started summoning Elaina.
Despero faced off against the demon, who claimed to be his brother, and asked him to switch sides. Despite believing his claims, Despero was not tempted to join with the other demon, as the demon confessed that (a) his goal was to spread chaos in Conan, which is why he was poisoning the king, and (b) his brother had tried to kill him, and in fact had assumed he was dead until this moment. So it eventually came to blows.
With the shadow mage gone, Elaina, Zatsuichi, Oshi, Despero, and Ariana gathered around the sword-handed demon, and prepared to lay the smack down. So he teleported onto the roof, which might have bought him more time if Zatsuichi hadn't still been able to pinpoint him.
But where had the shadow-mage gone? Natsuki soon discovered the answer to that. The girl she'd rescued, she found, was NOT the heir they were looking for, so after stashing her in a tree, she leapt down to return to help the party fight... only to find who else? The shadow mage. "What are YOU doing here?" she cried in alarm... a cry that was picked up by Zatsuichi's sensitive hearing, and he ran to assist. "Don't you know that we'll just beat you up again?"
Between them, the two weakest combatants in the party managed to subdue the shadow-mage, who swore himself to Zatsuichi's service. Since he wasn't evil (which they could tell because their holy weapons didn't work on him, a continual annoyance fighting him) Zatsuichi agreed not to kill him right away.
On the roof, the fight between the sword-armed demon and the rest of the party was fierce. Elaina was the first up, but her and the demon were too evenly matched to hurt each other much, and Despero could barely scratch him through his damage resistance when he finally pulled himself up. Ariana made Oshi's armor fly yet again, and the Emerald Knight proved his worth, dealing massive gaping wounds to the incredibly resisiliant demon. Soon, Elaina and Despero were relegated to a secondary role, healing his armor and flanking with him to assist his mightly slashing, while the demon fought back against this, the biggest threat, with all his might (and his five attacks a round).
When the demon cut off Oshi's armor's head, and Oshi kept fighting, he began to get nervous... and soon fled for his life, teleporting away after snarling that the party should 'sleep well'. Ariana, in addition to casting various support spells, had tried to put a dimensional anchor on him, but it hadn't stuck. Grr.
With the battle over, the party regrouped, and spoke with Goku... who revealed that his wife had been killed in a demon attack when his adopted daughter was young, so she'd been sent to the Temple of Mishra to be raised as the daughter of the high priest there, and her name changed to protect her.
In other words, the heir was Ariana. She wasn't quite sure what to make of that. Since the king's 'illness' was really demons poisoning him, though, she might not have to take over ruling the country after all, if they could put an end to that.
But there were still two days to go to get back to the capital, and the most dangerous demon was still alive and on the loose.
last session next session, different campaign
Tom was going to end the game here, but no one had anything ready to run for two weeks from now, so he figured he could make a session worth of epilogue.
After words, I headed over to Tasho's and hung around with some people. Mostly gossiping, although we did some Halo deathmatch. I didn't win, but it was still fun on the small maps. The big two-fort map that everyone seems to love was just annoying, especially with invisibility on, though.
