RUN AWAY!

I finally got the maintenance guy for my apartment on the phone, and asked him (politely) why he'd never finished fixing my bathroom. "Is there something wrong?"

He apologized and explained that there were a lot of emergency maintenance orders that had come in while he was in the middle of removing the mold, in particular the ROOF HAD COLLAPSED in someone else's apartment.

I'm not sure whether I'd rather that was an over-the-top lie, or the somewhat unnerving truth.

Anyway, I was also taking the rent check down today -- I try to do it a couple days ahead of time, since I've had landlords that would slap an eviction notice on your door (and a hefty late payment penalty on your bill) the night of the 1st -- and found both 'Val' (the manager) and the maintenance guy sitting in the office chatting. Val asked how I liked my new bathroom.

"Um... it isn't quite finished yet."

"Oh, but at least it must feel good to have all that black mold off the walls!" The black mold is still, for the most part, on the walls. According to the plan of action given to me by the maintenance guy, he's going to seal it in with antifungal crap and paint over it. So right now, the bathroom looks exactly like it always has, only with moldy paint dust scattered across various surfaces and some holes drilled in the ceiling.

But instead, I said, "Well, there are still holes drilled in the ceiling..." while edging nervously towards the door.

Guy jumps in with, "I'll finish it up this afternoon. I've been waiting on some equipment I needed."

I finish up with, "Oh, that's okay, I just... um... yeah!" and run away, fleeing in terror.
