"Hi, there's a bug in the big change you checked in last week, so I'd like to do a bunch of work to defeat the purpose."

"No, you should just fix the bug instead. I put in a special variable that you can check to tell your special case apart from everything else."

"There's a lot of places I'd have to do that. Defeating the purpose globally would be less work."

"It'd screw up more things than you'd be fixing. Fix the bug."

"Oh, I could special case the things it'd screw up."

KILL ME NOW. Or better yet, kill my coworker. He agreed to fix the bug, but historically this means that he'll decide it's too hard and go ahead and sabotage everything I did anyway, and I'll have to go fix it. The reason this is fucked up in the first place is because he wrote crap code. Bleargh.
