Tonight we finished up the last few battles in Bastion of Broken Souls. The ending was sort of anticlimactic, in a way, but sort of satisfying. Just... a little silly.

The vrocks, badly hurt by May's fireballs, flew off with their feathery tails between their legs -- but the local wildlife was made of sterner stuff. The soulmarauders were vicious (although they mostly failed at sucking out souls) and tough, and to Abbey's dismay had no heads.

Eventually, May mazed one, then the crystal worms arrived, failed to Zap Abbey (thanks to a lucky blink), scared away the other soulmarauder, and then got their heads chopped off by the vorpal whip. They thrashed around a bit, but the fight was basically over.

Now that there was a break in the fighting, Conner noticed that as he'd been moving from room to room, he'd been feeling more 'attuned' to the Bastion. So he cast 'Find the Path', and it led them down the tunnel the Vrocks had fled down.

The Vrocks were the least of the demons holding out in the small tower in the next room -- there were also Glabrezu and Balors. The visible Balor was killed before it could act, and a Glabrezu was turned into a trout. This didn't slow it down much -- it kept on using its spell like abilities to Stun Abbey, and then May, while the other Glabrezu and Balor came out to play. Still, the entire fight was over shortly, with no damage suffered by the party, except for from the Balor's self-destruction.

One of the Balors had a particularly nasty unholy sword, so Erdann Shapechanged into a Planetar to wield it.

In the next room, the 'Find the Path' told Conner to walk into the light in the center, but Erdann figured out what was going on -- Conner had now visited all the rooms around the central light, but the rest had a few more to go. So they did so, then cast a few more buffs, hasted up, and charged inside.

The dragon Arshadalon was waiting for them, along with his pet bard. The bard was quickly executed by Erdann and Abbey, but before May could disjunct the dragon it lept on him (and Conner, and Erdann's wolf), crushing them beneath its bulk.

But Conner and the wolf had been waiting, and scurried away as May disjuncted the beast, stripping it of its buffs, then ghostformed to get away. The dragon was pissed, and rehasted and chased May across the room, but couldn't bite him. Then the wolf attacked, and the dragon discovered that he *could* bite *it*, and claw it, and tear it up into... well, a slightly injured wolf -- all the bear's heart and animal growth and whatnot made it resistant even to a full dragon attack sequence at +20 power attack.

Conner used a Miracle to cast Tenser's Transformation, abusing badly worded rules to bring him up to a fighter base attack for a second time (when combined with his Divine Power or Might or whichever), then charged into battle... but just then, Abbey was finally given the standard buffs the rest of the party had been getting as a matter of course, allowing her a slim chance to hit the dragon with her Vorpal Whip -- and she did, beheading it instantly. The fight was over.

Or was it?! The dragon's chest burst open, and out popped a giant pulsing diabolical heart, which proclaimed itself to be some devil the party never heard of, and summoned major artifacts to be its weapons. And look -- a bunch of balors who'd been waiting just beyond the nexus entered, sensing Arshadalon's death, to capture this devil and bring him back to Demogorgon's side!

Then May chain disintegrated them all, and the fight was *really* over.

On the way out of the Bastion, they were greeted by its true guardians and congratulated on their deeds, and given the Zap of Epicness. Then they went home.

last session next session, different game

I rolled the dice for Luis when he was using his Vorpal Whip, because it was just too important if he was cheating on them -- but of course, Vorpal is itself overpowered even without possible cheating. There were a lot of vorpal weapons around in the module even if he hadn't bought one, though.

The Epilogue battle ending like it did was really, really silly, but everyone laughed, and no one *really* wanted to fight the damn things anyway. I'm just glad to be done with this campaign. 20+ level D+D characters are just... egregious.

Next I won't be GMing -- Erdann's player (Jeff) will be running us through the campaign he just did for a different group. I think I might want to play a Bard... but how can I make it not suck? Hmm...
