Ninjas underground, ninjas in the library
Feb. 15th, 2004 08:58 pmToday we had the second session of Tom's anime-themed D+D game. Tom seemed very interested to find out that I was posting logs of the game sessions (I sent him a link because he claimed he'd lost his notes in a computer crash and wanted all pertinent information any of us had) and said that he'd be willing to help out with notes and things...
Tom, if you want to help out, post an anonymous comment with what I got wrong, or send me e-mail, and I can edit the post. That's really the easiest way to do it, since I don't write these out until I post them.
[edit: extra details added, thanks to Tom]
First, a Dramatis Personae, which I wrote down this time:
So, at any rate, a few minutes after Oshi lept into the chasm, a stone slab slid out to bridge the gap -- but before the party could follow, the ninjas rushed them!
Natsuki tried to blow them up with a fireball, but they were only lightly singed. Zat tried to stand guard to attack them as they passed, but the leading ninjas they leaped forty feet, over the heads of the party, on a beeline for the bridge. Occasionally, the statue on the walk of columns would connect and send a ninja flying into the chasm below.
So Natsuki and Felesse and Ari chased after them, eventually blocking the doorway past the bridge, while Despero and Zat thinned out their numbers by attacking as they flowed past. The blocking efforts were mostly futile, but between potshots taken as they ran past, and the rear guard's hewing and slicing, half the ninjas were taken out, including their leader.
That still left plenty to bother Oshi, so the party ran down the (now blade filled, but mostly harmless) corridor of traps to try to catch them before they could slaughter the poor inkeeper's son. Felesse-Prime was there guarding him, but aside from that things were MUCH worse than they'd guessed, as a secret back entrance opened to allow the *evil* ninjas to enter -- apparently, the ones they'd been fighting were some other, less evil ninja clan.
Oshi finally finished whatever he was doing (apparently, some puzzle the Emerald Knight had to solve), and summoned a suit of majestic green platemail -- with a door in the front for easy access. But before he could get inside, the evil ninja leader (from the previous encounter) jumped in and sealed the armor behind him, cackling with glee! "The power is MINE! I will destroy you all!" he said, just before the armor baked him into goo, and ejected his steaming skeleton.
At that display, the surviving ninja fled, and Oshi was coerced to enter the armor so that they could see if he'd bake too. But he didn't -- he was, indeed, the true Emerald Knight. The armor vanished, taking its place as bracers on his forearms, but he knew he could summon it whenever he needed it.
And he needed it right away, since they needed to ask him directions to find Leto, the heir to the throne they were searching for. He put on the armor, and knew that the answer was in a town a few days away -- or at least, that that's where the king's mistress had fled 20 years ago.
While staying the knight in the inn, they were awoken by guards searching for the “Twilight Blade” who was supposed to be staying in the inn. Everyone filed out in fire-drill formation, then Natsuki snuck back in to get a glimpse of the fearsome enemy. He wasn't anyone she recognized, but she got to see him take out a bunch of guards and strike a dashing pose.
Still, the next morning, they were off! And they dragged Oshi with them, in case they needed to ask more questions. The trip was uneventful, but when they arrived in the new village, no one had any idea who they were talking about. Eventually, they found out that the farm had burned down shortly after the mistress had taken up residence, and the children given to an orphanage. The orphanage didn't have much to tell them either, though -- they'd been adopted a long time ago, at the same time as a bunch of other kids whose parents had been killed in the 'Battle of Kain'. So it was off to the hall of records, to find out who to.
The hall of records was relatively small -- it was just a smallish village -- but it still took over an hour to find the information they were looking for. Leto was adopted by Such and Such person. Yay! But before they could act on the information, they were attacked! It turned out that 'Oshi' -- who was asking all sorts of suspicious questions about what they'd found -- was really the ninja magician who'd helped the ninja leader escape!
Zat saw through his illusion instantly (although perhaps 'saw' is not the right word) and held him at sword point, but this was to little avail -- the magician poofed across the room, and lashed out at Zat with a 30-foot chain.
That pattern continued for a while -- Zat slicing the magician up a little, everyone else being unable to affect him (he was displaced, and spell resistant, and had DR, and kept *moving*), then him retreating farther and unleashing some strange attack -- vipers next (from tattoos on his chest), then a whirlwind of chains.
But then Ariana finally got a hit in, drilling a whole through his chest with a beam of light, and between that and Zat he decided he was taking too much damage, and vanished through the floor. Everyone ran downstairs to try to get him, but he was nowhere to be seen -- apparently he'd sunk into the floor and teleported away.
So it was with some haste that they headed for their next destination, as the enemy would surely be after the same thing. But the rain that met their departure soon became a full fledged storm, and they decided to take refuge in a convenient ruined tower (although not THAT convenient -- they were slogging through mud for hours before they saw it) in the hopes that it would be full of monsters and treasure.
Their hopes were not unfounded -- not thirty seconds after they entered, while they were still arguing about marching order, their horses were attacked by an evil flower with tentacle-vines. Chopping it up was the work of a few moments, and then it was back to the arguing. Natsuki wanted to be sneaky and scout, but it was too dark for her to see, so instead the dark- and/or blindvision capable party members KATHUMPED about the ruined corridors, looking for evil, while Natsuki searched the cleared areas for loot, and Ari and Felesse guarded the horses.
Eventually, they found a ghost -- a harmless ghost, of a little servant girl, trying in vain to clean the rubble-strewn floor. Felesse concentrated, and reported that many, many spirits were present in this place, not all of them benign.
Natsuki wandered off, and found a shiny suit of gold platemail half-buried in some rubble. She carefully approached it... and a ghost knight appeared, pointing a sword at her. She froze, and it didn't move. Eventually, the rest of the party found them. Quick negotiations revealed that no, the ghost was not going to give up his armor, no matter how shiny it was, but that he could be put to rest if they cleared 'the room of the dead' below.
So it was down into the basement, to beat up on some training dummies. Or, as they quickly discovered, vice versa. Zat and Natsuki were badly hurt, but between Oshi (back in the green armor) and Zat, and Despero, and Felesse-Prime, the dummies were taken down.
Some zombies approached, and were turned to dust... but it was obvious that there was more to fight down here in the catacombs.

The game was fun, although Eric likes to do things like 'I say something wise' instead of saying something wise, and Ed wasn't *present*, so we didn't really get to see him show off his new powers the way he was supposed to. Oh, well.
Then I came home and did more housework, trying to get things up to spec. Bah.

First, a Dramatis Personae, which I wrote down this time:
- Natsuki: My character, a cat girl rogue.
- Zatsuichi (Zat): Eric's blind old man, katana expert.
- Ariani (Ari): Dave's priestess of Mishra.
- Despero: Josh's demonic fighter, Ari's bodyguard.
- Felesse: Michelle's little girl (who sometimes summons(?) an angelic guardian who will be called Felesse-Prime)
- Oshi: Ed's character, the soon-to-be-emerald knight.
So, at any rate, a few minutes after Oshi lept into the chasm, a stone slab slid out to bridge the gap -- but before the party could follow, the ninjas rushed them!
