Tonight was Lazar's friday Shadake game, which was spent mostly in (IC) preparations for The Final Battle. One way or another, things should be coming to an end soon.

Lord Aberhad did indeed rant and rave upon seeing the dagger -- in another language, but a name he mentioned spurred Lord Mosher's memory, and he found a description of the dagger in his book. To use it, it was merely necessary to stab the victim in the brain or heart, or other 'center of power'. That is, not an arm or foot.

But how to accomplish this? The Argent Claw rarely travelled anywhere without a pack of his priests and demonic elementals. When alone, he could perhaps be surprised, dispelled, and soul-sucked. Lure him into the well that sucked magic? That would free his demons, but it would also negate the party's advantages, which mostly consisted of magical artifacts.

No, lure him out into the open, where his elementals would attract attention and be neutralized by pre-existing forces. The shaoli port! They would lure him there, at the same time as the Razians were persuaded to attack, and the massed armies would deal as efficiently with his elementals as they had with Sophie's. It was hoped.

The bait? The only bait they were sure would work was Lord Aberhad himself. The Argent Claw would surely leap at the chance to defeat this most powerful of his adversaries, even if it meant exposing himself.

Tsuru would of course wield mage-bane, and strike at the Argent Claw from hiding, ridding him of his protective magic. Kiet, somewhat of an expert at throwing daggers, at least in the local pub, would then bullseye the soul-sucking crystal dagger into his heart. This left Sophie to carry Lord Aberhad around on her back, ostensibly to transport him to some ship or other, and somehow survive the Argent Claw's assault long enough to lead him into the ambush.

Lord Mosher said it would take 40 hours to arrange for the war, and sent the trio off to speak with their contacts, and call in what favors they could manage.

Sophie first sought out Philander, to get in touch with Corrain -- only to find out that he was, apparently, a grey walker now. The enemy had gotten to him! There was an extra invisibility device in the tree, however, and Philander himself was willing to aid in the fight to avenge his friend, as long as he could snipe from a distance and (hopefully) avoid getting killed.

Tsuru spoke with the familiar of the mage they'd robbed from multiple times, who wanted to help, and with other animals and birds, including the rats of the Muriel Mines, who hated the miners and would gladly fight against their masters. He gingerly revealed this secret power to Sophie and Kiet, who were like 'cool, why didn't you tell us before?'

Tsuru also purchased the aid of Theckla and her organization with his share of the money from Lord Aberhad's tower. Sophie gave hers to her family. Kiet, presumably, kept his.

That night, Sophie and Kiet got very very drunk in the Jade Tiger. Sophie spent most of the night hopped up on Illiski wine, telling True fortunes, much to the dismay of her audience.

The next day, while Tsuru 'discussed business' with Theckla, Kiet and Sophie researched methods of safely summoning and/or contacting ghosts and demons, hoping to enlist the aid of the Steel Wizard (a ghost) and the fire demon who'd marked Sophie, and seemed willing in the past to come when she called.

Sophie went home to perform the summoning ritual, but was interrupted by Corrain's appearance out of a sudden mist. He gave her a gray amulet, and faded back into the mist... with Sophie right on his tail, refusing to let him go until he literally dissolved in her hands, and she found herself in a strange gray land, standing on wet sand that couldn't possibly be anywhere near her house. "Damn you! Give him back!" she wailed.

Deciding not being trapped in some other religion's afterlife forever was the better part of valor, she turned back, and summoned her demonic friend. He identified the gray amulet for her ("It will protect your spirit.") and offered a great deal of protection from the Argent Claw's magic if she'd let him mark her again. She readily agreed. It was painful and gruesome.

Before dismissing him, she made him promise not to tell the Argent Claw about their plans, since it wasn't clear whose side he'd be on.

Meanwhile, Kiet was waiting near the ruins of the procyonisk's mansion that Flokin had burned down, where he and Sophie had agreed to wait for the ghost. Sophie had forgotten, in the excitement of the mist-napping and the summoning. The ghost appeared anyway, and reiterated its desire to assist. Kiet told it where and when to do so.

Having done all they could, the trio waited for the appointed moment to finally make their move to end the Argent Claw's threat.

last week next week

When I got home, I discovered a bunch (two trucks worth) of Puget Sound Energy workers doing... something to my apartment building. A few minutes later, they switched off power to half my apartment (it's on two different circuits). Including my cable, VCR, microwave, and alarm clock, but not the outlet where I normally plug in my laptop. Yay, I get to reset all my clocks, and call in to get my cable reactivated again, once they finish, if they ever do -- it's still not on, properly.

And SOMETHING is beeping incessantly. Grrr.

EDIT: The cable box is fried, and won't be fixed until Tuesday. Meanwhile, I have 17 channels of crap, including none of the channels I ever watch.
