Tonight was my D+D game, still playing City of the Spider Queen. The party penetrated a little further into the underdark, then trekked all the way back. Again.
While the party was finishing its latest shopping trip, a vulture demon attacked them, right in the shop! The proprieter tried to dismiss it, but failed... it was easy prey for the party, though. May held it, and that was that.
The party wind-walked back into the underdark, blowing past all obstacles at 60mph, until they came to a fork in the road, and chose to go right instead of left. This led them to a very large, mushroom-covered cavern, where they were attacked by a pair eyeless green flying creatures that shot bolts of sonic energy. One tried to lift Abbey up into the air, but it was dead before it reached dangerous heights.
The party eventually found the things' nest, and killed two more of the critters, and looted their meager hoard. They weren't terribly hurt, but they'd ended the Wind Walk spell, and had a long way to go back to the intersection, since the cavern was a dead end. Even with a fly spell, they didn't make it before it was time to rest. But nothing bothered them overnight.
The next day, they spent seven hours flying before reaching anything of interest -- almost the limit of their doubly-extended flight spells.
The location of interest was a cavern with a stream, and half a petrified drow. The party investigated the statue briefly, then pushed on.
In the next cave they found two drow, not petrified, which looked like they were going to attack, but were wiped out by a prismatic spray and some follow-up melee smackage. Erdann noticed a hole in the ceiling of the cavern, and stood guard over it while the party went to loot the dead...
...which left him right in the path of the beholder's eye rays as it moved into position at the top of the hole. He resisted them all, although the disintegration ray still hurt. Conner ran up and tried to blind it, but failed, while Erdann did a flame strike then moved out of line of sight. Abbey positioned herself where she could sneak attack the beholder as it came down the hole.
This left Conner alone to take the brunt of the beholder's wrath, which killed him. Then the beast opened its antimagic eye to guard the hole and keep the party from flying up.
This stopped May and his fireballs, but Erdann decided to make his own VERY LARGE entrance with a stone-to-mud spell. The beholder flew down to try to get the whole party in range of its eyes before firing, and Abbey, hiding all this time, finished it off with a sneak attack.
But again, while the party was looting, another threat appeared -- a mind flayer and his pet Grimlock. The mind flayer failed to stun the dire bears (Erdann's new pet and May's summon which was still around), then Erdann trapped it in a wall of stone. It had no way to get out on its own short of plane shifting, so it had to have its pet waste two rounds chopping through the wall while the party pelted it with spells and the celestial dire bear chewed on it. The grimlock actually lasted another round after that -- it absorbed an incredible amount of damage -- but its weapon wasn't magical enough to really hurt the dire bear, and it didn't have anything else it could really do since the party was flying. The mind flayer *finally* managed to stun the summoned bear just before the grimlock died, but was getting hurt by splash from fireballs and the like, and decided to flee (via plane shift) before the bear started chewing on it.
Nothing else came to bother them, but with Conner dead they decided it was time to retreat. Unfortunately, with Conner dead, they didn't have a good way of getting to the surface quickly -- even Flying twelve hours a day, it took two days to get back, and they had to fight off some wandering demons, that pelted them with magic and then... well, then basically failed to damage Abbey, who was fighting defensively. It was over quick. The only hard part was offing the regenerator, but they eventually had Abbey coup-de-grace it with a vial of holy water. It didn't make its DC 60 fort save.
Back in town, they had Conner raised, and decided to commission some improvements to their items, which would take two tendays to complete. Another vrock teleported in to bother them, but it was held and killed off.
