Firecat Medley
Oct. 19th, 2003 12:47 amYesterday, I took a break from doting over my sister's baby to go play in Lazar's Shadake game. It was a kind of scatterbrained session, in which not all that much happened, until the end when Tsuru and Kiet *finally* agreed to actually do something.
Kiet and Sophie and Tsuru spent the whole day arguing about what to do. The argument mostly went along the lines of Sophie acting restless and nervous and suggesting a course of action, and Tsuru rejecting it, while Kiet stood nearby acting serene and unconcerned. Tsuru rejected kidnapping a zombie (as Courrin had requested), rescuing the life instructor, hiding out outside the city, stealing a ship and becoming pirates, turning each other in for the bounty on their heads, and luring any bounty hunters after them to the Muriel Mines where they'd be sure to stumble across the zombies.
Sophie tried to unleash a swarm of fire rats to burn all the posters, but the spell went awry and the rats she summoned were all blind, and started burning down anything they thought felt sort of like a poster, mostly tablecloths. The trio fled.
The commotion did allow Asher, one of the other people in their cell, to locate them, though.
"Sopie, what are you doing attracting so much attention?"
"We're in disguise! Er, I mean, I don't know who you're talking about. We're simple spice merchants. And besides, Tsuru wouldn't let us actually go hide out. Apparently he's in charge now."
In the ensuing conversation, it worked out that their own guild was not, in fact, after them, and that Theckla Roper (Tsuru's girlfriend, I think) was their new cell leader, and that she wanted a report of what they'd been up to, and the guild's cut.
A report was given to Asher to pass on to Theckla, if they didn't see her soon, but as for the cut... they explained that they hadn't actually stolen anything of *monetary* worth lately. Although they'd seen many valuables in the Muriel Mines.
So that night, Asher accompanied them into the mines, in search of treasure to enrich the guild. An antimagic barrier on the mine entrance kept out the elementals Sophie summoned to scout for guards, but not Kiet's summoned spectral skeletal thingie, which phased through the walls. And not the non-summoned people themselves.
So Sophie told the smoke birds to wait outside and carry messages to Theckla and to her mother if they didn't come out by morning, and summoned a large magma-kitty to accompany them inside, for protection, while Kiet gave them nightvision of a sort.
The magma beast turned out to be a bad idea. Sophie and Kiet *barely* managed to keep the elevator's descent under control with the thousand-pound-plus lump of molten rock on it, but once the zombies came and added a mine cart full of glowing green ore and a dozen people...
So after filling their pockets with possibly valuable green ore, Kiet made himself fly, and Sophie activated the Drakivolki wings she was still planning to give back in combat class (assuming they dared go to school with a price, albiet an insultingly low price, on their heads), and Asher and Tsuru, being tiny Feriphal, rode on their backs, while the zombies plummeted to their gruesome, horrific injury, and the magma cat splattered.
After the zombies had crawled off the smashed elevator, leaving behind a trail of blood, and dragging the mine cart with its wheels bent out of shape, Sophie extracted the fire elemental from the broken magma beast and set it on some ominous black bombs nearby -- which detonated on it to no apparent effect. They followed the zombies down a hallway...
...and a mocking voice taunted them, and set the eight firecats Sophie had summoned and lost control of on her last trip on the party. The cats were much, much more dangerous than Sophie remembered, especially after Flokin enhanced all fire magic in the vicinity to 'help'.
Sophie surrounded herself with firecats to block the enemies from attacking her, and tried to snuff their flames -- hurting them, but not quite killing them. Kiet attacked them in some fashion with similar results. Asher got the killing blow on several of the cats, while he and Tsuru were running around acting as involuntary decoys and cat toys, and after half the attackers were gone the rest retreated, and the voice that had set the cats on them told them to continue on forwards, as Grey Walkers were blocking their retreat.
Not that the party was especially afraid of Gray Walkers -- at least, not compared to mages that could summon firecats and torture a ghost to death (or so the sounds they'd heard during the battle had suggested, just before Kiet lost his connection to his ghost) -- but curiosity led them onwards, following a bouncing white bomb, to the chamber where Tsuru had first tried to open the vial on Wesley, where they were met by one of the Twins, who'd helped them get the sacrifice to the dragon.
Which made *no* sense. Whose side was he on?
last session next week
The session ran late, and I got home around 2am, then got stuck on the toilet until 3. Then woke up at 8 so that I could go get comics before heading out to my sister's again. Ugh.
