The Isle of Random Encounters
Aug. 12th, 2003 12:40 amTonight was my D+D game, formerly on Tuesdays, moved to Mondays to accomadate Luis, who couldn't come today anyway... but we had two new players, and didn't want to confuse them by playing one last week on Tuesdays for their first day.
There was an awful lot of combat.
May, Abbey, and Conner opened the door of the silent house on the monster-infested island city, saw a pair of transparent, ghostly undead, and quickly shut the door, deciding not to fight them. Instead, they headed towards a burned and blasted warehouse, that looked like it might be special in some way since it was damaged.
Meanwhile, back on the outlying island where the remaining humans had their village, the two top Demon Hunters of the village, a warrior named Caemriss and a druid called Erdann, were dispatched by the elders to watch the newcomers whose arrival had foretold the immanent end of the world, so that someone they could trust might be in place to act should the newcomers try to somehow bring about the end of the world. The newcomers' battle with the demon was clearly visible across the narrow straight, so they set out straight away, and arrived just in time to assist the three in a battle with a pair of Hooked Horrors inside a warehouse.
The druid informed the party that the warehouse bore definite signs of being the outer portion of a red dragon's lair. May and Conner thanked him for that information, and decided to go rest up and memorize the proper spells for red dragon slaying -- it wasn't likely that this dragon would be large enough for its tooth to be carved into a tuning fork of the right pitch to get them home, but they had to try, just in case.
So they picked a house at random, and Abbey opened the door to look inside... and was immediately charmed by the nagas who were waiting. "Come in, friends!" they offered, "All of you come inside!" Abbey, of course, complied, but the rest were more cautious, so one of the nagas led her towards a back room while the other closed the door on the party.
But of course they weren't about to abandon their friend, so Conner opened the door and whacked the naga with his mace. This annoyed it, and it fireballed the group, while the other hustled Abbey through a backdoor with soothing words...
The fireball hurt, but not that much as fireballs go, and that naga never got a chance to cast another spell. Caemriss split it in half, then May flew up to the door through which Abbey had just been taken and opened it. The naga cast defensive spells as the party closed in around it, but May dispelled them, and it too was killed, although it got off another fireball which nearly (but not actually) killed May.
The nagas had some treasure, and the house was clean, now. May cast a rope trick, and the party squeezed inside to rest and prepare anti-dragon spells. In the morning... they found that the house was no longer clean, as a pack of fiendish dire wolves had moved in.
Conner and Caemriss dropped out of the rope trick and fought back to back, while May and Erdann supported them with magic through the trapdoor. Caemriss was badly hurt by the end of the fight, having spent most of it on the ground being chewed on, but May's haste-accelerated fireball barrage and an impressive cleaving slash that dropped three wolves with a single swing carried the day, and... well, Caemriss was badly hurt, but healing was available, and they were as ready for the dragon as they were likely to get.
So they walked back to the warehouse (which was next door, as they'd picked a house next door to it to clear out and rest in) and cast a bunch of 'protection from fire' spells, and bull's strengths, and flys, and stoneskin on the main combatants (Caemriss and Conner), and a freedom of movement on Caemriss just in case. They were jumped by another pair of hooked horrors, then scrambled down a loose slope into the natural cavern beneath the warehouse... to find themselves faced with *three* huge, red dragons, waiting for them.
May sonic-balled the draconic trio, and by the way they reacted was able to spot that it was a mirror image spell and that they faced only one dragon. This was fortunate, as the dragon responded with a horrendous torrent of flame that ablated away more than half of their fire protection -- three such breaths would have killed them all (as would the one had they not been protected).
Caemriss and Conner charged the dragon to fight it in melee, but it was well protected by not only the mirror image, but by shield and mage armor spells, and the attacks against it seemed futile, until May dispelled it, stripping it of all its magics. In seconds, Caemriss had nearly slain it. It cast a web to try to trap its attackers and retreat to better terrain, but Caemriss and Conner were both able to walk through the web as if it wasn't there, and the dragon was quickly slain. Its horde had little magic, but lots of coins, and a journal written on demon-skin. May also made sure to take the dragon's teeth, and Erdann to skin it -- a lengthy task, but they weren't in much of a hurry.
The party spent some time investigating the warren of tunnels behind the dragon's lair, but found nothing but more hooked horrors and some giant wasps. So they headed back to the village to rest in actual safety instead of trying another house, and were jumped by another demon patrol.
Erdann briar-webbed the demons, but they just teleported away and started pelting the party ineffectually with produce flame... still, they weren't very strong demons, and were quickly put down.
Back in the village, they finally unlocked the dragon's journal, and read about the dragon's childhood... and how her parents had been killed by a 'giant fiery snake that called itself a god', and reanimated as skeletal guardians. Skeletal dragons seemed likely to be easier to fight than non-skeletal dragons, and surely the dragon's parents would be bigger than the dragon herself.
Conner was also contacted by his god, and warned that he wouldn't be allowed to leave the plane without rescuing the ancient knowledge of the fallen civilization that had lived on the shimmering isles.
