I finished Golden Sun: the Lost Age, and so needed another RPG for the GBA to play while on the toilet etc. Although I still have Advance Wars to fall back on.

But anyway, I bought 'Lufia', and so far it's been... well... it's a mess. And you know why? Because it's one of those games where the people who made it decided that save point bullshit would make things interesting.

So, last night I played a little, and after half an hour of slogging through a dungeon got to the boss with one of my two characters downed by a wandering monster ability that reflected all damage done to it during a round back at your own characters -- lovely thing to put in the first dungeon, where your guys are level 3 or so. I managed to kill the boss with the remaining character, who got all the XP. Of course, the excess over what was needed to get him to the next level was lost. You know, about 60% of it.

Anyway, today I played through the next segment, and this time it was the boss that killed the SAME one of my characters with one of those cheap 'oh, NOW I'm going to hit you for twice what you'd normally take, to kill you if you were trying to conserve potions, seeing as your only skills right now are 'attack' and 'use healing potion''. This was aggravating. The last save file was the one I made the night before, and this was about half an hour after that. Not to mention that my main character was now 2 levels behind where he should have been.

But, pfeh, whatever, I don't have any choice, do I? I'll just find the church/save point in the next town and get him raised...

...um... no, I won't. Gee, there doesn't seem to BE a church in this town. I mean, yeah, there was probably a save point guy somewhere -- one of the two save points I'd found up to that point was a regular looking NPC standing around being a church all by his lonesome. So I was talking to every NPC in town...

It was a really big town. After another half an hour of fruitless searching I gave up and turned off the power.

Look. It's very simple. Save point BEFORE a boss. Save point AFTER a boss. Save point you can go back to periodically without fighting through all the monsters in between is good. Save point prominently featured in town.

If you're only going to offer save points every hour or so, don't FRICKING HIDE THEM YOU UNBELEIVABLE ASSHOLE! DIE YOU FUCKER! DIE DIE DIE DIE!

And if you have a 'save anywhere' feature that DELETES the save file upon resume, you're not just making the game playable on a gameboy. You're also adding insult to injury.

I don't know if I'll attempt to play it again. Even when it's not making me want to murder its designers, it's kind of slow-paced and boring.
