Mandatory Patriotism
Jul. 4th, 2003 03:56 pmNote, first of all, that when I say something is 'mandatory', I don't mean that someone came to my house and forced me to do it. I just mean that someone *should*.
Anyway, the subject of todays reverie is the Star Spangled Banner. It may be a horrid tune stolen (if you believe Negativeland) from a british drinking song, but the imagery is powerful.
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof, through the night, that the flag was still there...
We exist because people hate us. To spite them. It's as simple as that. If the world was fundamentally aligned with our values, then we wouldn't need to be a country.
And that's why the terrorists will never win. They will only feed our anger. GRAAAAR.
