Tonight was Lazar's Shadake game, where we finished off the scavenger hunt, although we have yet to turn in our items and get them scored. I was very nearly killed by a string of *six* 95+ results in a row on percentile dice (high is BAD) including one 00... but managed to save myself by rolling an 03 on my last chance to grab a ledge before falling to my doom, a 21 to keep my grip when a falling monster bounced off my head (and fell to its doom) and a 33 to stay conscious long enough to pull myself up onto a ledge... so many 'save or die' rolls, it's almost like he WANTED me to die. O.O
Anyway, Sophie and Tsuru and Kiet regrouped after the battle at the Jade Panther, and decided to rob the nearby Temple of the Holy Blade. Since the building was obviously empty (the monks lived in separate dormitories) they all went inside, and started rifling around... Tsuru found a hidden compartment with a magical holy blade in it, just as one of the priests decided to wander into the office to have a smoke. Somehow, he didn't spot the pony-sized Sophie huddling behind his desk as he rifled through the drawers looking for his pipe, and she conjured a huge cloud of pipe smoke to cover their escape (nearly, but not quite, choking the priest to death in the process, although the possibility had never occured to her).
The next stop was a boarded up mine, where rumor had it white rats could be found. White rats were indeed in the mine. Some of them were very large. One of those put its very large, pointy fangs clean through Tsuru's leg, but Tsuru and Kiet managed to fight it off.
Meanwhile, Sophie had slid down a rope to a lower level, chasing a small white decoy rat, and ran into another group of scavenger hunters fleeing for their life from another ROUS. She fought it with spell and claw, and was holding her own until she massively screwed up an attack spell, and not only sent slivers of fire spraying everywhere (hurting her, and all the kids in the other group, and the rat) but disintegrated all her own equipment (except for the ugly ring), and all hte other group's equipment, and everyone's clothing, and the rope that ran between levels, and the rock beneath her own feet, sending her sliding down the mineshaft.
As noted above, she managed to catch herself on the edge of a tunnel two levels down, and keep her grip as the plummeting rat (which had leapt into the shaft after her -- her spells had been damaging its sanity as well as its health) bounced off her head and landed with a sickening crunch much father down the shaft. She pulled herself up into the tunnel (lit by strange green glowing rocks) and called up for assistance.
Kiet pulled her out, and even lowered her down to retrieve to the giant rat -- which was lying in a pile of the bones of the rats' victims, although unfortunately not an unlooted pile. He also healed her up, even getting some of the lingering burns from the house fire that had struck a while back.
Flokin brought a dead small rat as a peace offering, but Sophie was not amused. Kiet also tried to heal Tsuru, but ended up rendering him immune to sound -- he made no noise sneaking around, but also couldn't talk or hear.
Silent Tsuru infiltrated the Rhazian port and stole some wheel locks (and some replacement weaver-silk for Sophie, since walking around outside naked was bound to attract the wrong kind of attention), then walked into the cat races and got himself cured by the white-furred cheshire. That left only a few items, which they easily snatched, although Sophie ended up running for her freedom from the city guard, which fortunately didn't recruit many female manis, at least not for night shift, and had no hope of matching her speed.
All that's left is to turn in the items and get the final score. Did they pass, or will they be denied their rightful place in organized crime?
last week next session
Right after the battle with the rats, Lazar casually mentioned that we should pay attention to how many spells we were casting, since he was using the limits... Sophie had 1 spell left to cast until the middle of the next night at that point, while Kiet had 2. 'Or 12, for damage or status.'
And so it came out that by some extremely questionable logic, Kiet's horribly boosted magic was *2* skill levels boosted instead of one! Making it effectively twice as powerful! And had been boosted on the extreme cheap, at a fifth the cost it should have taken! Thank you vague, abusable advantage modifier guidelines.
I managed to convince Lazar that he'd underpriced it, I think, but he wasn't about to retcon it. Sigh.
