Today was Tom's RttToEE game. After PBEMing most of the shopping trip, it only took us three hours to sort it out in person. Then we began our stealthy assault by setting off alarms. And fireballs.

The party did some shopping in Veluna, purchasing a replacement blade for Guinsette's sword, some wisdom-enhancing Ioun stones for Bella and Mepechu, some special magical arrows for Darien, and probably other things as well. Fixing the replacement blade would take several days, as would Bella and Xaod's consultation with their temple, so the rest of the party decided to check in on Hommlet and see if they knew what was up.

Unfortunately, they did. Unfortunate because they insisted on coming along with the party -- just after they'd finally gotten rid of the last band of moochers! Eventually they talked the War Council (composed mostly of old, retired adventurers from Burne's Badgers, who'd defeated the original temple) into sending only Burne with them, while the rest of the warriors from the city created a diversion.

Despite his name, Burne's wizardly focus was on illusion and enchantment -- the two schools all the party's mages had chosen to forgo. So his help was, er, helpful.

Mephechu wanted to get a new companion to replace Piko and Muyo, who were kind of useless in combat. So she checked them in to a stable (she wanted Piko back later) and released them as companions, and went to talk to the council druid about where to find a very large bear or cat of some flavor.

The druid proved remarkably unhelpful, and was eventually revealed as a doppelganger. Guinsette and Mepechu dispatched it, and had the local cleric speak with dead to determine who it was working for (Tharizdun, of course) and what it had told them (nothing, they'd gotten to it in time).

Mepechu did find a slightly immature dire bear to take as a new companion. And when Bella and Xaod were retrieved from Veluna, they had new weapons and lots of scrolly swag, although not the scrolls of Greater Restoration needed to cure insanity that they'd been told to ask for above anything else. The other temple, in Hommlet, gave everyone in the party 24-hour strength, dexterity, and consitution boosting spells, which were appreciated although it would have been more appreciated if they'd said in advance that that was what they were going to do so that the clerics and mages could memorize things other than Bull's Strength.

So then the party was off. But to where? Apparently, the upper temple was full of gnolls again, and teleporting into the middle of them would be... well, not *dangerous* so much as *cruel*. So instead they teleported to Knulb, where according to the council, the old insane shopkeep who they'd heard back at the crater was the true champion of Tharizdun had vanished, leaving the city empty.

They didn't waste any time investigating Knulb, and instead moved immediately to the farm where the druid scout from Hommlett (who'd since gone missing) had spotted some activity. Darien quickly noted that the dirt in the fields was from deep underground, and fresh, and tracks led to and from the dry well in the woods.

Watching the well was a demon, who dominated Guinsette, ordered her to protect it, and was then chased away before Guinsette could act on those orders. 'Mission accomplished!' Guinsette thought to her cute little dominated self, and took no action against the party, who was thus none the wiser.

Down the well was a narrow winding passage, through which Mepechu's dire bear fit easily, thanks to the Armbands of Reduce she'd claimed because everyone else thought they were useless. Then, there were some ogres.

The ogres were holed up in two little rooms, watching the hallway through cracks in the door. Guinsette, invisible, scouted them out, then burst through one of the doors and attacked! That was the signal for the rest of the party to run up to assist. Marcus assisted by toasting one room of ogres with a fireball... but it was only a light toasting, since these were Super Ogres.

The Super Ogres didn't stand up long against the party's full might, but they hit damned hard, and even with a stoneskin and endurance spell Guinsette was pretty badly hurt... of course, she was taking on one whole room of them all by herself for a bit. Soon only one was left, Dominated by Burne, and everyone was healed up with spells and wands (including the dominated ogre).

The dominated ogre told them where its boss was, but first -- looting time. A secret passageway led to an abandoned lab where the party found some gems, and a vacuous grimoire that failed to accomplish anything. One of the Super Ogres also had some magic stuff, although it hadn't helped him live any longer than any of the others.

Mepechu used her stone sense to scan through the trapdoor to see who waited for them in the next section of the dungeon, and discovered a giant (the ogre's boss) and an earth elemental swimming through the rock, which snapped her out of her trance and hurt a lot. The giant was obviously waiting for them, and fighting earth elementals in tunnels is never any fun, so the party retreated a little to plan their next assault. Malvar suggested summoning Allips...

last session next session

After the game (and before the game, for that matter) I drove to Magnolia to check on Mikey... but I'm done now! Yay! And it only cost me five hours driving and $12 in gas!
