Hell Module. Well, okay, Gehenna.
May. 14th, 2003 09:01 amTonight was my underdark themed D+D game. We did a module. There was a lot of fire damage the party didn't take because they were weird-ass things. And a hell of a lot of SR to piss off the sorcerer.
The beseiged gnomish village pushed the party together with the other 'heroes who'd come to save them' -- an elvish sorcerer and a half fiend of some flavor. Also, they discovered that their wizard was secretly a cleric -- he came out in order to gain use of the powerful shield and mace they'd found in the vault [or, because the player decided he didn't want to be a wizard anymore].
The gnomes were selling weird-ass equipment that the party wasn't quite sure they'd want to trust with their lives, but also some more generic potions and wands at the temple. They found out that an evil succubus had seduced the village protector Belrath and was sending the demons to torment his former charges -- the villagers refused to believe it, but it was blindingly obvious.
So they went to the wildly phasing tower. Out front were the bodies of the two other village adventurers, former companions of Belrath. One had a journal that basically said that Belrath had been seduced by an evil succubus masquerading as a gnome and probably kidnapped for evil purposes. So, no new info, really.
Abbey badly botched an attempt to disarm the trap on the front door of the tower, and toasted most of the party, except for the ones who were immune to fire, who happened to be out of range.
Eventually they got the door open, and were attacked by a flesh golem (immune to the sorcerer's magic). It stood in the door and growled at them, shrugging off their feeble nonmagic projetiles, but refusing to come out and play. So they walked up and chopped it up, taking a few lumps in the process. They then proceeded to loot the tower thoroughly until they got to the lab level, where they were attacked by a demon (mostly immune to the sorcerer's magic) pretending to be trapped in a magic circle. It didn't really manage to do much before being wounded badly enough to convince it to flee.
The next level was the roof, looking out across the misty gnomish area of the underdark. While the party debated whether or not to stay in the tower while it shifted, the tower shifted, and they were immediately attacked by a huge smoke para-elemental (not immune to the sorcerer), which forced a bit of its essence into Abbey's lungs. The poor rogue staggered about as she was slowly torn apart inside, while the cleric (Loren) and fiend-thing (let's call her Sakura) tried to beat at the elemental... but only the cleric had any success, with his horribly magical mace.
Eventually, the sorceror (May), after doing some damage with spells, put up a circle of protection against evil, which hedged out the elemental for a while, protecting the party while the druid cut Abbey open and removed the smoke. Abbey was very badly hurt (barely alive even after much healing) and was taken back to the village to rest.
The rest of the party continued on. They were assaulted by some mephits, but it was a joke -- only continued harrassment by the smoke elemental of anyone straying too far from the mage made it interesting. Then it was on to a small temple, where they slaughtered a Xill priest and some of his pets. The Xill (mostly immune to the sorcerer's magic) scared the sorcerer by tumbling past the fighters and popping up in his face, but May stepped back five feet (over the molten lava, using a fly spell cast earlier) and magic missiled him to death (with a lucky roll to defeat his SR).
There was nothing of interest in the temple, though, so the party pressed onwards, and were assaulted by some weird evil outsider things (which were mostly immune to the sorcerer). One, a blind dog-thing, was slaughtered quickly by Sakura, but the other cloudkilled the party (and although they were all ECL 7 or 8, several of them were in risk of death) then hid in the cloud, almost -- but not quite -- taking out Sakura, the only one brave enough to face it in the cloudkill... or rather, the only one immune enough to poison. But Sakura won in the end.
At the far end of the cloud-kill infested room, sitting on a balcony over a lower chamber, was Belrath, locked up in a cage. With much clanging and smashing, he was cut free. Meanwhile, May peered over the edge and saw a bunch of Xill sitting and waiting, guarding 20 peasants in various stages of 'pregnancy', and decided to fly out and taunt them. They responded with a hail of arrows that nearly (but not quite) killed him, and he decided to take cover with everyone else.
Once freed, Belrath insisted on attacking the Xill (who were mostly immune to the sorcerer's magic) and freeing his people immediately. The party concurred, and they all jumped over the ledge to attack, freaking out the Xill who'd expected them to take the stairs. It was still a fairly long battle to take them out, and Slee the druid was paralyzed and almost snatched away to another plane -- he was saved by Belrath's summoned arrowhawk, which also managed to absorb an incredible amount of ranged fire without going down. For the most part, though, they were simply tedious to take down rather than truly dangerous.
Belrath wanted to search for his still missing wife, but the party convinced him that rescuing the helpless villagers that were right in front of them was more important. So he went with them and the whole gaggle of people, back through the fiery cavern and over the narrow bridges. The smoke elemental swooped down and killed a peasant who strayed outside May's circle, but that brought it in range of the party's fighters, and it was destroyed at last. Nothing else remained to stop them from returning the villagers to the village for healing.
But what of Kasmine?
last session next week
Pet peeve of the day -- #$%^@& HeroForge. It's either extremely inaccurate as far as templates and ECL races are concerned, or just hard to use, or an excuse to cheat, because THREE different people using it 'accidentally' added a few character levels because they weren't accounting properly for their ECL adjustment. Lance also tried to give himself 44 stat points instead of 32, and about 40k in starting equipment insted of 7200 (most of that was one item that wasn't especially powerful in combat, but still).
Maybe I should start auditing them or something.
