Actually...

Actually, we did end up having a WT game today. There was a bit of arguing over the mechanics of hidden spells and counterspelling, but other than that it was pretty good.

Kijji and Silverspray went to visit Wonkotirip and Cimmaronovia the morning after the engagement/screw Bruno party, and found him in an odd mood. He'd been drinking, apparently, and was also coughing, which was strange since there didn't seem to be any smoke about. He was also extremely charming and enthusiastic about going out in public.

So the party naturally assumed he was a Bonstable, egged on by a badly miscast 'Watch the Distant Friend' spell. Kijji tried to prove he was a bonstable with a 'Healoc Illusidor' unmasking spell, but it showed him as Wonko had been two days previous... so huh, it wasn't a bonstable.

Silverspray pointed out that while they hadn't spotted a spell on him, a relatively simple illusidor spell could mask another spell's presence. The problem is that the masking spell itself would be difficult to stop, and thus dispel, which seemed extremely unfair.

It was simple enough to come up with a spontaneous spell to specifically see through illusions, however, and the masking spell was indeed spotted. By this time, Wonkotirip was out in the marketplace kissing babies and shaking hands, and otherwise acting really creepy. So Cimmaronovia and Kijji lured him into a dark alleyway and tied him up... just before he fell unconscious from a particularly bad coughing fit.

Since Hellestew was closer than the healers' guild, they took him to Cimm's old Magiador professor to ask him to at least point them to someone who could break the spell. Fortunately for them, the professor's curiosity led him to dispel the masking spell and analyze the actual spell making Wonko act all weird.

Unfortunately, it was basically a dry-run of a city-killer -- a magical disease that spread from person to person by contact or even mere proximity, designed to re-infect its hosts perpetually. There was a temporary cutoff mechanism built in, although what the trigger was was unknown, but that wouldn't stop the victims from being infected. All the party was already infected, as was the professor and probably hundreds of people in the market!

Wonko was apparently the original target of the spell, which could only have been done with a lengthy ritual with Wonkotirip present. It could have lain dormant for months, though... but Cimm and Kijji were sure it was recent, Bruno's doing, revenge for his partial disinheritance. The Danetti just didn't have the magical technology to develop such a thing.

The professor charted out a diagram of the spell, and called the chancellor to ask the Duke to quarantine the city immediately before it spread to the entire world tree.

After that I worked on the duergar ambush for the game I have to run Tuesday. The bank vault has lots of traps in it, and the duergar are pretty nasty. I hope I don't kill everyone.
